Production of new diesel and petrol engine cars will become illegal in the UK by 2030, as part of the government’s commitment to fighting climate change. Over the next seven, short years, the whole car industry will have to invest billions in new technology, new designs, new facilities, new production lines and new suppliers. If it does not do this, production in the UK will cease. British car production is already at its lowest level since 1956, in part because of a shortage of microchips, but also because several car plants have closed and new investment is not coming into the UK.

For someone whose posts strongly suggest you’d like no cars at all on the
road, what do you care if the UK stops producing them?

UK car production is dwarfed by that of Mexico, we can buy them from there.

It’s always sad when a country moves on from its smokestack period. The new
industries are far less visible than the dinosaur heavy industry they
replace. Unfortunately they need brain to replace the brawn, so a new type
of worker emerges. AI will earn more money than steel ever did, but is less
in the public eye. Besides, exporting steelmaking also exports the
pollution that goes with it, win-win. Change is uncomfortable but
inevitable. Get used to it.
