Hi all. a friend gave me on old laptop to use as I see fit. I have his
password so I can log in, but I want to give the laptop to someone else,
so I need to disassociate it with his Microsoft account account and
connect it with hers. How do I do that? I can't see how to do it. thanks.

so she can log on with her Microsoft account and password and none of
the data from my friends M$ account will be connected to or associated
with her or this laptop. thanks

it's not using a local account password to sign in, it's using his
Microsoft account. should i just change the sign in option to local
account? but then will her email and password be associated
with/connected to his M$ account?

Reinstall the operating system. You get the Win 10 ISOs from MS for
free: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
Then reinstall Windows. Also completely wipe the HDD before giving it
to someone else.
It is necessary to do so to ensure the data from the former owner is
being wiped.

yes I know, but I was trying to avoid that, and find an easier way to
swap ownership.

yes I would erase the hard drive before reinstalling windows and software

Don't do this. If you don't wipe the drive, private data can be read by
the new owner. Deleting them from the file system isn't enough to
safely delete them.
Do you really want that?

Better to do a factory reset of the laptop. That will see it update
again, but would ensure that nothing stupid the previous owner
had done would still be there.

I picke up a PC tossed out on verge collection. Seemed the CPU fan was
clogged with lint, a simple clean was all it needed to get it going.
I found it had home videos of swinger's parties on it. I couldn't watch
them though - all fat middle-aged people, pretty sad and desperate lot.

Ccleaner has a good windows wipe program after reinstall (“Reset Your
PC”), after just wipe free space, takes all night or more for highest
security wipe. Free, use then uninstall.

No, you still have the license. Computers with Windows 8 or newer
preinstalled have their license key in a UEFI variable and the new
installed Windows can use it, if it is the same edition (e.g. key for
Win 10 Pro you need Win 10 Pro to make it work).
