What makes you think that anyone who isn't actually in the squad is
being ignored? Cook was selected for all three Lions matches against SA
earlier in the tour. That's not being ignored in my book. Maybe if he
had outbowled either Robinson or Craig Overton in the 4-day match
instead of taking 1-108 while they took 5-105 and 6-83 respectively,
he'd be closer to Test selection.

I wonder which of Anderson, Broad and Robinson the idiot is
recommending should be dropped to accommodate his

Do you think that because the CC is so big that the FC stats are
sometimes bloated?
When a player is taken out of the CC and placed on a national
development programme at least they are playing and training with the
rest of the best and not the best (and worst) of the rest.

In the Irish inter-pro from the 4 teams on any match day there would
be a couple at least of current internationals and most of the rest
would be in the national loop.
If the system works as well as it does in rugby it'll do nicely.

outstanding or dreadful performance can skew the result, and if the
top performances are against weaker sides, they can lead to misleading
conclusions - as we saw when the amazing Will Gidman moved to a div 1
side and struggled badly.

I've never been a fan of averages as a substitute for thought,
although I suppose they're better than nothing if thought is beyond
one's capacity.

What averages can certainly do is suggest people one should pay more
attention to, and conversely suggest that someone's been looking
through some pretty rose-coloured spectacles if they keep saying that
some bowler who averages about 50 is a great prospect.

England's talent-spotting network is pretty good, especially now that
they can watch every ball bowled in the CC sitting at home if they
choose. Players aren't being ignored: that those with stunning
averages aren't being picked simply means that they've been watched
and not yet done enough to sufficiently impress people who understand
cricket.
