BBC's decision to cover England's Pakistan tour remotely branded a 'scandal'
Plus: Matthew Mott insists Ben Stokes and recalled Alex Hales do not have to be 'best friends' to help England win next month's World Cup

The BBC is facing furious criticism after deciding not to send a commentary team to cover England’s first tour to Pakistan for 17 years. It is understood a combination of cost savings and security protocols are behind the decision.

Test Match Special, cricket’s flagship radio show, will instead call the action off television images from a studio in Salford.

Julian Knight MP, the chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media & Sport select committee, told the Sunday Telegraph: “It’s a scandal that the first series in Pakistan for nearly a generation is not going to be covered properly. The BBC’s top brass always cite cost cutting, but while they waste huge sums on the likes of Gary Lineker and groan under the weight of middle managers, they cannot be taken seriously in any way.”

It comes as another blow to traditional listeners after the BBC announced the closure of Radio 4 Long Wave earlier this summer meaning TMS will in future only be available through digital platforms despite millions being unable to access them.

its a shame but i hope they will cover the tests in december, or at least pay some local journos to put
pith helmets and englash accents if they cant send anyone. It doesnt surprise me becos this is what
they did during covid with a number of matches, and it must be very tempting to save money by doing
the same for any tour which doesnt have tests.

Englands odi form is pretty dire ATM, so it will be a major surprise if we manage to win many [any]
of the 7? matches. Then its off to Oz for 3 more exciting t20s vs the best men of oz b4 the WC
circus starts.

there are any number of numptys on youtube who also do this.

It's amusing that the "outrage" is being bigged up by a newspaper
which has made strenuous efforts to ensure precisely this sort of
decision by its incessant criticism of the BBC and how much money they
spend.

But then it's the house organ of the Conservative Psrty, which has now
abandoned all pretence of having a clue.

Cheers,

Mike

Actually most of their sports coverage is surprisingly "woke". Their
writers have been very much on the side of Azeem Rafiq, for instance.

But it's rather ironic that they should be complaining about the BBC's
cricket coverage, when their own coverage of county cricket is now
pretty much non-existent. It's very different from 50 years ago, when
every Championship match would receive a full report by a named
journalist, and the reports plus scorecards would fill an entire
broadsheet page. Sometimes this season they haven't even found room for
full county scorecards, but only potted scores, and second XI and minor
counties potted scores are a thing of the past. With the Hundred being a
novelty last year, it was fairly well covered, but this year apart from
scorecards it's been pretty much ignored. Only international cricket is
now properly covered. Of course the great god football takes up ever
more space

That's because the Telegraph has fired nearly all of its sports
reporters.

True enough. They now seem to have only three cricket journalists, two
of whom pretty much only cover England's matches. They could still carry
reports by the ECB Reporters Network, though, like the BBC's website
does for one.

But maybe somebody at the Telegraph reads this newsgroup, as there are
three decent-length reports of county games in today's paper. One, on
Surrey v Yorkshire, is by Scyld Berry; the other two are uncredited and
I think are from the aforesaid ECB Reporters Network.

The whole of the mainstream British media has bought into the pc tyranny because they think they will be sacked otherwise, vide the universal use of batter for batsman and asst referee for linesman. RH

Hilarious that someone who complains about people using language he
considers offensive should also complain about people exhibiting good
manners by not using language they consider offensive. It's a mark of
the uncivilised to decry politeness and good manners, and the village
idiot so strongly disapproves of good manners and politeness that he
considers it tyranny. Just like a 4-year-old.

Cheers,

Mike
