I was an apprentice in the early 1960s at a company in Worcester. A
salesman/rep at the company was a distinguished looking older gentleman
who people told me was a retired Worcs cricketer. His name, IIRC, was
Tom Perks - does anyone here know anything about him?

Reg Perks was a successful fast-medium bowler for Worcs from
before WW2 to 1955. I saw him a couple of times, but don't recall much
about him from that. He took 100 wickets per season year, in year out,
and got called up for a couple of Tests, with decent results, but by
the end of the war he was a veteran and no longer in contention. By
the early '60s, he would have been 50 or so, so "distinguished looking
older gentleman" would be about right.

Thank you. Yes, of course, it was 'Reg' Perks. I would have said that by
the early sixties he was more like 60 than 50, but you could be right -
people looked much older in those days!

Thanks, Robert. The reason I couldn't find him was because I had Tom
Perks in my head. So he was only 50-ish in the early sixties, he really
did look quite a bit older. I remember him being interviewed by Peter
West later in the sixties when the touring overseas test team were
playing at Worcester. They always used to play the first match of the
tour at New Rd, don't know if they still do.

Correct., RH

don't know if they still do.

No. In fact the days of counties playing against touring sides is almost dead. RH
