A number of drivers were pulled over for going too close to an unmarked police cyclist on Edinburgh roads.

Police in the city were carrying out checks as part of Operation Close Pass on Wednesday morning.

Their patrols were focused in the Leith area, with the aim of educating motorists on how to safely share the road with cyclists.

An unmarked police cyclist was sent out on the road, and officers observed drivers to see how they passed.

A total of six motorists were warned and spoken to in relation to unsafe overtaking.

Edinburgh Police shared news of the activity this afternoon, adding:
"Six drivers warned and spoken to in relation to unsafe overtaking of an unmarked police cyclist."

During their patrols police also arrested one person for driving while disqualified, while two further vehicles were seized for traffic offences.

They added: "A variety of offences also detected from no insurance through to mobile phone offences."

here they have to give it away and its only real function is that is
assists those wishing to move house or swap their car for a newer one.

The publication should be done by posting a prominent and unmistakeable
warning sign a hundred yards before the trap (in either direction). That
would make such things comparable with fixed cameras and their prominent
fluorescent paint. It would also reduce breaches of the speed limit in
the area, which is surely what the local authority and the police are
aiming at achieving.

where the speed traps would be. Did that make a difference to the number

You have reminded me of an entertaining evening in a village near
Hannover, thirty-odd years ago. I was on my way to Berlin and stopped
short of the East German border for the night. After dinner, I
positioned myself on a bench outside, drinking a few local beers in the
evening sunlight. A police car was parked across the road and an officer
was standing beside it with a hand-held radar gun, aiming towards
traffic coming from the direction of the A2 autobahn.

As far as I could see, the car and the officer were completely visible
(the road was almost a straight line). But driver after driver was waved
to a halt with those little table-tennis bat things they have, and
issued with a ticket.
