There is a button on the top left of my Chrome browser called "Reading
List".

What does this do and how can I get rid of it?

Don't. It's useful for storing pages without the hassle of
bookmarking.

As for "how can I get rid of it?": Right-click it and turn off the
'Show reading list' tick-mark.

That wasn't too hard, was it!? :-(
