He started the season well, IIRC, but seemed to badly tail off. After
the Tests, when Pope and Foakes came back he couldn't get into the
Championship side as either specialist batsman or as keeper. A case of
the dreaded "second season syndrome" perhaps, when bowlers have had a
chance to work out what a batsman's weaknesses are. I remember that even
such a fine player as Graham Thorpe fell victim to it.

Yep - the high-point of the double ton at Bristol - and when Surrey were 40/3 at one point but didn't really kick on from there.

That's fair - I realise he didn't play all the games - but that seems to have been an issue with one or two other players at Surrey which will always rankle (me anyway).

He was even more highly regarded than Pope in the youth system at Surrey, so I was told by the parents of another Surrey former youth player.
