I've outgrown the 4TB HDs in my Synology NAS so plan an upgrade to 2 x 8TB.
Any recommendations?

I was also looking at the ex-enterprise disks, for example:

https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/components/enterprise-hdds-sdds-storage/large-form-factor-sata-drives/filter/in-stock/1/storage-size/6tb

Worth the saving?

Questions.

1) Large Format Factor will they fit into you NAS?

2) Looks as if the are CMR, which you need/want.

3) OEM drives Y/N?

4)Refurbished warranty returns drives Y/N?

Yes, I think so - the existing are 3.5".

I think CMR is better? So yes, if it's more reliable. Speed isn't an issue.

As 2 - I don't mind.

Yes, I would consider - much as ex-enterprise. The NAS is now only switched on
for a few hours at a time, a few times a week.

I wouldn't feel too bad about using used discs in a RAID, since if one goes
the others still have the data. The main thing to consider with enterprise
drives is they can be more power hungry and noisier. Although possibly the
difference against consumer drives is not too significant - look up the
specs. They are perhaps a bit more robustly built than consumer drives so
I'd hope they last a bit longer.

Is there a reason for limiting the capacity of a single drive to 8TB ?

All done, got a couple of Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC320 8TB, £210
delivered the pair.

So far so good - impressed by the specs at least - 2 million hours MTBF(!) and
a 5 year guarantee (manufacture date Dec 2019, although it wouldn't surprise
me if the warranty doesn't apply). And everything's working very snappily.

The only slight thing is the noise - I can /just/ hear them in the room above
the cellar where they're kept. Maybe once the've finished indexing it might
quieten down a bit.

Couple of 3TB disks going spare (£80 delivered for both, one Seagate
Ironsomething, 1 Toshiba consumer) if anyone's interested.
