Interesting story behind that. Closed in late June after a burglary,
sold a month later, the new owners did not plan to re-open it as a pub,
then a fire broke out, and the fire brigade found the access lane
blocked by "piles of dirt", so they had to run very long hoses.

Unfortunately, the building is not listed, so there is no legal
obligation to rebuild it as it was.

Talking of crooked things though, Back in the 80s, myself and my Mother got
stranded for the night on Jersey. We stayed in a room which had a decided
tilt. You could tell that if you put anything round on the floor It was the
kind of place that although very clean, you got the impression was used by a
certain profession most of the time. It had an odour. the gas fire had a
broken ceramic, and downstairs was a bar where young ladies chatted openly
about their trade, shall we say.

It is surprising how often old buildings, 'ripe' for development, catch
fire just after changing hands.

that fell out of the sky? She was then attacked by the bird of prey that
had dropped the snake.

Nope, they can list any structure, not just buildings. There are,for
example, many canal locks and bridges which are grade 2 listed, and one
or two which are Grade 1 listed.

As for who did it, there is a video of the destruction available on
line, and that might show the owner's livery or even the registration of
the digger that did it.

I am sure the fact that the current owner also owns a plant hire firm
nearby is pure coincidence.

The guy who demolished the pub, who owns a plant hire business next
door, could find himself in a bit of bovver.

Incidentally, as an ex plant hire employee, the bucket on the machine
used to demolish the pub was the wrong kind. It was a grading/ditching
bucket. It should have been at least a rock bucket.

So I guess the guy in charge isn't very bright.

That could have been enough to get it listed. a provisional listing can
be applied for very quickly and then your changes have to be approved.

A fiend was in the process of turning a shop into a restaurant. He had
started removing the shelving and found that there was ornate Victorian
tiling behind it. When originally built it had been a butchers and the
tiling was appropriate for a butchers shop. The door was open while
removing the shelving and a passer-by must have seen the tiling. Within
2 days the tiling had been inspected and a provisional grading applied.
From then on any changes had to be approved, before they could go ahead.

Apparently he and his missus have a long history of such vandalism.

Apropos: if a moribund pub is to be used as a dwelling, 'change of use'
must be granted - a planning decision. I'm told that the value of a
building increases by ~30% as a dwelling rather than licensed premises.
