The first one looks like a trampoline.

Regarding the landings, I know that pilots train for crosswinds of
various strengths. But at what point does it become dangerous for
aircraft of those sizes to land, thus necessitating diversion to other
airports?

Some of them, unsurprisingly, had to go around.

If we note that Eunice has hit most of England, and assuming that planes
would have to diverge to other airports, where would they go? Would they
go to CDG or AMS, for example?

Would carriers also be able to call force majeure, thus relieving them
of their obligations to get passengers to their original destinations?
Passengers in that case would be responsible for getting themselves to
London.

There are specific maximum allowed cross wind speeds for landings and
take-offs for each aircraft type (around 35-40kt). But wind shear is more
dangerous, and that's harder to predict.

Individual airlines seem to have different policies. For example, in
today's Heathrow videos, BA captains seem to be more risk averse, and abort
more landings than others. I also remember being very frustrated some years
ago when my BA flight to Seattle was cancelled (along with all the other BA
flights from T4), when I could see other airlines continuing to fly. I had
to fly via Vancouver the next day.

I've seen reports today of flights diverted to (IIRC) Geneva and Oslo (and
one had only come from Italy!!).

I've always assumed that if your flight is diverted to another airport,
it's the airline's responsibility to get you to the correct place (even if
in a situation like today that just means waiting until tomorrow). BICBW.

Does that mean that the airline might have to stump up for a hotel,
assuming that another flight is not available until the following day?

The AF crash in the South Atlantic, and overshot Toronto landing were both
examples when the equivalent BA flights had diverted (round rather than
through the storm, and to Ottawa, respectively). The AF Concorde crash
wouldn't have happened with a BA Concorde, as BA had devised and fitted a
safety modification to prevent exactly that occurrence, but AF thought it
unnecessary.

Yes, has happened to me. Was an EU requirement so maybe up for revision?

I hadn’t heard that before. What was the modification? There were mods to
all Concordes afterwards which involved fitting extra panelling inside the
fuel tanks, IIRC.

I think that's already happened with the unsurprising comment that the
airlines will be paying out less in total. I wonder if tickets
purchased through EU websites will still be subject to EU regulations?

One day, one of those aircraft trying to land in stormy conditions is
going to crash.

Regulations will be tightened up then.

One aircraft did not withstand the storm.

Exploding tyres weren't unknown with Concorde (very high pressures, high
rotational speed), and the risk of tyre fragments hitting the wing fuel
tanks worried BA so much that it devised and fitted special mud guard type
shields to deflect tyre fragments. It duly provided the info to Airbus, who
offered the mod to AF, which turned it down as it thought Concorde's
excellent Michelin tyres needed no such protection.

There was also no communication between the captain and first officer on
the flight deck of that AF flight. Both of them had their hands on the
yoke, AIUI, but neither one told the other.

VIA Rail Canada's Winnipeg-Churchill train is quite nice, I have heard.

The crosswind compnnet wouldn't have been too bad, wind direction was

windshear that really causes the problems. As in everything the big boys

I suspect drones will probably be used for remoter stretches.
