New old stock engine with a used flywheel?

Interesting bit of hardware, but it has 4 too many cylinders and no
pushrods so it's not a real engine :)

You've been living in an alternate reality for *decades* Darren, and a
delusional alternate reality at that! And you weren't even born in the
50s so no idea what that era was like.

Well GM still made them up to 2021.
Hemi V8 seems to be still available in USA, but likely to end soon, as
it struggles to meet emission standards.

Very expensive display piece:-)
Mate has a coffee table made using 2 Toyota 4AGE engine blocks for legs,
both threw conrods, one at Bathurst, the other at Phillip Island so they
at least have some history that makes them interesting talking points.

What about *Darren's expensive 4AGE effort*??? That block has two
histories associated with it, Darren's invented history about a faulty
valve - and what really happened, failure to check piston to valve
clearance after fitting a shim head gasket.

I saw a Ferrari F1 engine on display, it was a jewel, just the right
size for a large sideboard if SWMBO would allow it in the living room.

One of my neighbours has a Norton bike in his living room (and a very
considerate wife).

Did I have anything to do with either of those engines? If I did, tell

Well the Yanks haven't been at the forefront of automotive technology,
want more power, add more cubic inches.

"The beast" by Jade Gurss is an interesting book about a pushrod engine
developed by Illmore for Penske to exploit a loophole in the regulations
for the 1994 Indy 500.

ROTFL.
He keeps very good records of everything he does on his cars and earlier
today we were looking at those records trying to work out what we did on
the engine in the PRB race car, its the one that broke a valve spring
about 6mths ago and finally have it almost ready to go back together.
The biggest problem was finding out what the valve retainers were from,
turns out that they were from a late 70's Kawasaki 900, we also decided
today that it was a good idea to replace the timing belt and so far the
only belt that matches the one we took off is off a Porsche 944 so the
engine is a mish mass of various bits and pieces.
He was planning on re using the Cometic head gasket but he's been talked
out of that idea so he's ordered a new one.
None of the records back to the dates we looked at mentioned you name,
its possible you may have worked on the engine in the green Clubman
which was the one that went bang at Phillip Island:-)
Your name was back a bit further, something about setting up the valve
timing on the PRB engine?
BTW the roller cam etc for the 383 has been ordered and is about 2 weeks
away.
Mark was missing his Torana so to keep himself happy he bought a Harley:-)

LOL.
Maybe he has sons like mine that have more influence over their mother
than me, when I wanted the Porsche she was giving me a hard time but my
boys told her off and insisted that I buy it:-)

Pretty much but even the smaller capacity (only 5.7lts :-)) LS engines
make pretty decent power and can even be reasonably economical if you
have a light right foot despite the old technology.

Yeah, I think I did that one after it broke a rod once, and the one that
grabbed a valve. Did some other minor shit as well like made a new oil
pickup and modified the oil pan. Can't remember which one it was now.

Cool. He'll thank me later. Flat tappets are not worth the cast they're
made from these days. He'll need to completely dismantle the engine and
*thoroughly* clean every square millimetre of it as that powdered cast
gets everywhere once it breaks through the hard layer, and it acts like
abrasive dust when it does.

Only their demise Darren - but that's usually more than enough.

Nothing astonishes Noddy so much as common sense and plain dealing.

It's the way to go, generally. As the old saying goes, "There is no
substitute for cubic capacity".

Worked pretty well for Ford with the GT40 :)

Actually this isn't exactly true. They've made some quite remarkable
developments with old style "cam-in-block" engines.

They are indeed. They can also make incredible amounts of power without
sacrificing reliability or needing to be revved like a GP motorcycle.

The engine ran very well for about 5yrs of racing so the engine builder
who AFAIK is in Qld did a good job but he didn't keep good records so
the problem was we didn't know what parts he used.
Its possible that the Porsche cam belt was fitted because the bloke he
bought the car from in Northern Vic has a Porsche and BMW Motorsport
workshop and he also races those makes.

I think that that is the main problem, the material isn't up to the old
standard, I was telling my US born mate about it and he said that he
owned about 7 SBC engines way back before he came to Australia and never
had that problem on any of them.

He'll need to completely dismantle the engine and

Its pretty much dismantled, just need to flush out the oil galleries a
few more times and a few other areas, we did find some evidence of some
minor damage in the area of no 7&8 bores and pistons but nothing
significant, fortunately it looks like the oil filter caught the worst
of it.
