My internet started dropping out on Friday. Initially, it manifested as
one way VoIP, god knows why. Then 1 Mb/s download, repeated DSL
disconnects in the log.

Today I'm using freezer blocks under both the modem and router, seems to
work.

Are others experiencing hardware failures? If so, are there better
solutions?

Actually, I probably meant "No, a fan." I'm not experiencing that
problem, but, if I were, I expect a fan would solve it.

A fan built in the device itself, sure. Like with PC cases, CPUs,
etc..., but these are passively cooled. I'm not sure an external fan
would make that much difference, I'm not sure if the air flow would get
though the casing.

It's not something I've really experienced before.

Do you remember Amstrad building fans into everything? A decent fan
playing on the surface of the router will have a dramatic effect.
HOPEFULLY! :)

The hardware is only 35 watts total, 8 low power devices.

The cupboard is big and only gets a degree or two 2 above ambient, with
the door closed.

Surrounding ambient rarely gets as high as 20 C. Today it is 32 C,
inside the cupboard with door open is 33 C.

33 shouldn't have caused any problems. What do the device specs say? I'd
expect at least 40!

<https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/dsl-modem-router/td-w9970/#specifications>

Operating Temperature: 0~40 (32~104)

I'm pretty sure it was well below that when the problem started. An ice
block sorted it, and the problem reoccurred when the ice block melted.

I only use it as a modem, and it was the cheapest I could buy, just a
temporary stopgap before fttp. So I'm not that upset.
