I like Ledmore. "North / East / West"

Round here we have "Preston and the South". Take that, Hatfield !

But, not running over otters is definitely a good thing, unless you're a
fish, and they probably don't drive anyway. But ... chance'd be a fine
thing, most places.

That reminds me of an old chestnut :-

Two fish in a tank one turns to the other and says, "do YOU know how to
drive this thing ?".

What did it say?. Ioften feel that the sign in Hollywood was never surveyed
before they put the letters there,as they are all at different heights like
a knackered old typewriter.

Not that far from Hampton Court there used to be a small road with signs
saying, Caution Toads crossing. I don't know if its still there, as
apparently they built them a tunnel, but how would they tell them to use the
tunnel?

Was there not a joke about fish on a bicycle?

Oh and why is computer code often called Hexadecimal, rather then
octadecimal?
There so many questions. Where do occasional Tables go when they are not
being tables?

The one I remember is "About as useful as a bicycle to a fish"

> Oh and why is computer code often called Hexadecimal, rather then

Computer code is written in hexadecimal format as the four bits in a
nibble have sixteen possible values. A nibble is represented by a single
base sixteen digit. ( 0 to 9, then A to F, then you start again at 11 to
represent 17 decimal).

A Byte is eight bits, and can represent up to FF in hex or 256 in decimal.

Octal is the name for base 8 - hexadecimal is base 6+10=16 just like
duodecimal is base 2+10=12.

Well yes that's the current convention.

> A Byte is eight bits, and can represent up to FF in hex or 256 in decimal.

It was not always so - the 36bit word PDP-10 supported both 6 and 9
bit bytes and binary dumps were in octal. The legacy of that was still
visible in the 8080 - if you write the instruction set out in octal the
pattern of op-code and register selection in the instructions stands out
clearly, in hexadecimal it is invisible.

Because it’s base 16, not 18.

The NCR 315 used 12-bit (+parity) "slabs" (syllables), each of which
could hold either three hex numeric characters or two 6-bit alphas.
It was very efficient in those far-off days when a 20 kiloslab ferrite
toroid main-memory machine was a big m/c.

The 315 was a solid-state discrete component second generation
mainframe using diode-resistor logic. I loved them to bits and back
again (especially on night shift ~1969).

I was a hardware man with white dustcoat and all, inc. the full set of
four different-coloured Bic Crystals in my top pocket nestling next to
the aide-memoire command-code card. That was only for when at base,
though; under the dustcoat was a proper city suit in case we had to
make an emergency visit to customers' premises.

N.B. No brown boots in the City!

* Ferrite core memory was the origin of the term "core-dump", where
the entire contents of main memory would be printed out for program
debugging porpoises. Don't forget your good specs. for perusing the
music-ruled green fanfold...

Indeed it was, usually by little Chinese ladies with small hands,
nimble fingers and excellent eyesight.

I was once inspecting a dodgy core plane in hope of finding a dry
joint or suchlike. I used a jewellers' loupe which popped out of
my eye socket, bounced on the core plane and shatterered a couple
of dozen cores. That made sure it was properly fscked; was my face
red. Happily for me, my boss took the view that it was already
intermittent so no real harm done.
