An absolute classic here (captured by road.cc reader Rendel) proving that despite what the benevolent motorists of Brighton and Hove may tell you, bike hangars won’t take up any car parking spaces at all… Especially if you just drive straight into them:

Odd how the car is positioned perfectly in a parking place.

Could it have been parked and some (cyclist) yobs have lifted the hanger
up and placed it on the car?

Especially as there is zero obvious damage to the car or hanger and the
empty, under used, hanger wouldn’t be heavy.

Those damn bikes not wearing hi-viz! Or maybe the driver was simply too stubborn to give up 'their' parking space, and decided to use it anyway!

EXPENSIVE WHATEVER HAPPENED.

I can sell you a tin-foil hat for the reasonable price of £99.99 and that's cutting my own throat.

Grove Lane SE5, 6/3/22. Truly they drive amongst us...how the blue blazes did they manage that? Waiting for confirmation from the Daily Mail/ABD that it's definitely the cyclists'/council's fault for taking up space on the road...

SE5 isn’t a Brighton / Hove Post Code, they start with BN.

SE5 is in SE London, Denmark Hill area, near Kings’ Hospital.

This one really backfired, even more than usual for you.

Still, it gave us all a laugh.

@cyclehoop
- hopefully you can recover the cost of replacing this cycle hangar from the driver's insurance.

ASSUMING IT'S INSURED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) can confirm the UK’s 2 millionth uninsured vehicle has been seized.

MIB data provided exclusively by UK police forces showed in January 2020, more than 2 million uninsured vehicles had been seized since powers to stop and seize uninsured vehicles were introduced in 2005.

Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is injured by an uninsured or untraced ‘hit and run’ driver, with many suffering life-changing injuries. This equates to 26,000 injuries each year or nearly one in every five road traffic casualties.

Because of high collision rates and established links to wider road crime posed by uninsured drivers, ongoing enforcement against the issue provides considerable support to Government road safety objectives.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that UK roads are among the safest in Europe, with decade-on-decade reductions in road traffic casualties being recorded, despite a rising population.

“The UK’s two millionth uninsured vehicle seizure is a significant milestone testament to the collaborative and determined work of the police, government authorities and industry to help make roads safer and fairer for all. While we welcome this news, we recognise challenges remain ahead and will continue working closely with our partners to help reduce the impact of uninsured driving.” – Anna Fleming, Chief Operating Officer at MIB.

Last year, over 137,000 vehicles were seized across the UK because they had no insurance, with London, Birmingham, Manchester and Bradford among the worst affected areas.

MIB supports police in the crackdown against uninsured driving through the provision of the Motor Insurance Database (MIB) - a record of all active motor insurance policies in the UK. Using the MID, police ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras can scan passing vehicles’ licence plates to see if they appear to be uninsured and make further enquiries at the roadside.

Once a driver is found to be without insurance, they can have their vehicle seized and can face court with an unlimited fine and a driving ban amongst the possible outcomes.

The not-for-profit organisation also works alongside DVLA to issue automated warnings to registered vehicle owners that appear to be uninsured via the Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) scheme.

Motorists can check to see if their vehicle is appearing as insured on the MID for free, by visiting www.askmid.com

Police forces around the UK have crushed more than 56,000 cars seized from uninsured drivers in the last two years, in the face of rising offender numbers.

According to the latest figures, a total of 100,983 drivers were caught driving without insurance in 2020 and 102,387 vehicles seized from offenders.

That represents a 16 per cent rise in the number of offenders from 2019, when 86,914 people were caught and 96,276 vehicles were seized. In total, drivers paid out £11.7 million in 2019-20 to have their cars released by police, according to data obtained by Confused.com, but in many cases owners simply abandoned their vehicles.

In cases where a car has been seized for an insurance or licence offence under Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, the owner has 14 days to reclaim their vehicle before police dispose of it. However, it can be an expensive business and it seems some drivers would rather write the car off than fork out hundreds of pounds to reclaim it.

On top of the standard £300 fine for driving without insurance, offenders have to pay a recovery fee of £150 and storage fees of £20 per day. They also have to prove the car is properly insured and taxed and that they have a licence to drive it before it is released.

If a driver fails to reclaim their vehicle, police can dispose of it. In some cases this can involve auctioning the car off and in 2019-20 police made more than £6.2m selling off more than 9,000 seized vehicles. However, in other cases the cars are simply scrapped or crushed.

A minimum of third-party insurance is needed to drive any car and the standard penalty for driving without insurance is six penalty points and a fixed penalty of £300. However, if the case goes to court offenders can be hit with a driving ban and unlimited fine.

Alex Kindred, car insurance expert at Confused.com, commented: “Driving without insurance is an offence that can be costly in fines but can also damage your record when it comes to applying for a new car insurance policy.

“Not only this, but you could risk having to pay to have your car released, which when you consider the fine as well, could end up costing you more than an insurance policy itself.”
