laundry delivery driver faces having 81 penalty points put on his licence after being caught speeding 22 times on the same stretch of road in less than three weeks.

Peter McPherson, 58, racked up the offences during his shifts for Galicia Laundry, which provides linen, towels and clothing to hotels, spas and restaurants in London. He has admitted committing the offences on a 30mph stretch of the A40 Westway flyover between July 15 and August 1 last year.

On July 15 alone, he was caught by average speed cameras on four occasions. A temporary 30mph restriction was imposed on the Westway in 2020 during repairs but has now been made permanent. McPherson’s lawyers say he already has seven points on his licence and concede that he now faces up to 81.

Drivers with 12 points usually face an automatic ban but McPherson is hoping to keep his licence by arguing that a disqualification would cause “exceptional hardship”. He told the Evening Standard he was “gutted” about facing a ban.

“I’ve been driving on that stretch of road for many years,” he said. “I was so shocked when all these fines were sent to me at work. There was a whole pile of them.” He warned that the situation has jeopardised his job at the laundry where has worked since leaving school at 16.

“Our client has instructed us to enter a guilty plea,” specialist motoring solicitors from Patterson Law told Willesden magistrates last month. “In accordance with Schedule 2 Road Traffic Offenders Act for the offences of speeding our client will be at risk of 71 to 81 points.. At the time of the offence our client had seven points, so will be at risk of a six-month disqualification for totting 12 or more points during a three-year period.

“Our client intends to attend court and present an exceptional hardship argument.”

The case was first heard behind closed doors through the single justice procedure, but will now be dealt with in open court on May 17.

Par for the course for your average urban cyclist, especially around
schools, 20 limits, shared paths, and pedestrian-only spaces. No wonder
cyclists resist the imposition of a licensing scheme.

That just shows how much attention he pays to the road when driving -
of course he's a highly experienced professional driver so he's safe
"driving to the conditions", except when they're any different than

Why do they always break the law many times and THEN use that excuse? Much easier to stick to the laws in the first place.

This is the problem with robot policing, especially when the robots can take weeks to inform a person of the offence. The driver should be given a chance to mend his ways.

There are a few exceptions such as Royal Parks.
