Gereetings,

I won a WD Red 2TB SSD on eBay.
Bought: ORICO 2.5'' Inch Aluminium USB 3.0 SATA HDD SSD Hard Drive
Enclosure Caddy Case
MPN:
2518S3-GY

It works fine, but my desktop internal SSD has TRIM enabled.

My question is: how do I enable TRIM on any USB SSD?

don't worry about it. modern ssds do their own garbage collection.

Yep, my new SSD is already full of garbage.

(Icon) UASP & TRIM

(Picture) Write 125, read 100

[Spec tab] Model Number: 2518S3-GY

UASP is SCSI protocol, maybe TRIM is supported when UASP is installed/running ???

*******

Device Manager may have a "Portable Devices" entry, and the
driver there may mention UASP.

But when it comes to getting device properties, I can't
get info about the TRIM status of my UASP SSD. fsutil fsinfo
may show info with the word TRIM in it, but it
"does not really mean it", as it lists the same crap
for all storage devices.

And the "Optimize" window wants to "defragment" my SSD,
rather than TRIM it.

My test result here for a USB cable is "fail". Fails
to verify that TRIM is an option. And Windows has been
doing this (in the Optimize window), like, forever.
Some patches, it's working, some patches, it's not.

There is an overall "DisableDeleteNotify" option, but that
likely turns off TRIM on everything. And as long as your
internal device supports TRIM, then that's not likely
to be the reason for a failure.

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
NTFS DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (allows TRIM operations to be sent...

But that does not imply that the hardware path to every
NTFS partition actually accepts TRIM attempts. An NTFS
on a HDD would likely not be a candidate.

When I tried from Linux, it said "Not Supported" for my adapter.
If there's an issue, I can't figure out where the issue is.
Presumably in the Linux case, it got some sort of NAK when
it tried. Like a bad SCSI Status when using UASP.

In the usual way, if you can. You'll only be able to if the filesystem
supports it, and the USB adaptor also supports, neither of which is a
given.

It's not the end of the world if you can't use TRIM. TRIM is used by
the filesystem to tell the SSD controller about blocks that are no
longer used (because a file has been deleted or truncated) which helps
the garbage collector to run efficiently. Using trim makes the SSD a
little faster to write to (because there will be more unused blocks
available, for a given amount of free space) and makes the SSD last a
little longer (because the wear-levelling algorithms have more free
blocks to play with) but the difference isn't huge in either case.

Crucial put it this way:
