A banned driver has been locked up after he narrowly avoided hitting a young girl and a cyclist during a police pursuit.

Mindless Adam Mosettig also clocked-up speeds of 65mph in a 30mph zone, flouted a red light, travelled on the wrong side of the road, mounted a footpath and caused another vehicle to perform an emergency stop - all while his vehicle had a flat tyre and an oil leak.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that the 26-year-old, who was on a suspended sentence for stealing a car and driving it with no insurance or licence at the time, was initially spotted by officers in Shieldfield, Newcastle, but he sped off.

They later found him parked-up on a street nearby but he mounted a footpath to avoid them and again disappeared from sight.

However, the motor menace didn't get far until he was spotted by another officer, who activated his blue lights and gave chase.

Rather than pull over, Mosetigg then began an "extremely dangerous" pursuit, which involved him narrowly missing a young girl, who was playing on a foot path in a back lane, and a cyclist.

The chase eventually proved so dangerous, the officer was forced to abandon it for safety reasons.

Mosetigg, of Eastgarth, Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle, was arrested after CCTV showed him abandoning the car and making-off on foot.

Now, the career criminal, who has 175 offences to his name at the age of just 26, has been locked-up for 16 months after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.

Recorder Anthong Dunne OBE told him: "Although it was a brief pursuit, it was an extremely dangerous one.

"You drove at 65mph in a 30mph zone, you travelled along a narrow back lane at speeds of between 25mph and 30mph and narrowly avoided hitting a young girl playing on a pathway in that back lane, you went on the wrong side of the road.

"Another vehicle had to perform an emergency stop to avoid a collision with you, you narrowly avoided hitting a cyclist, you went through a red light.

"When you're (sic) vehicle was found, it was found to be leaking oil and had a flat tyre."

Mr Recorder Dunne added: "It's frankly sheer good luck and good fortune that nobody was seriously injured as a result of your reckless and dangerous behaviour."

The court heard that Mosetigg was first spotted by officers with another adult and two children in his car on Gosforth Street, in Shieldfield, at around 11.30am on July 4 this year.

Knowing he was a disqualified driver, he reversed at speed and drove off before he was found parked-up on nearby Milton Green, this time without his passengers.

Rachael Glover, prosecuting, said one officer placed her vehicle in front of Mosetigg's to stop him getting away but he mounted a footpath and drove along it for 3m before disappearing from view.

However, moments later, he was spotted on Warwick Street, in Heaton, where the police chase began after he was seen cutting across the pathway of another vehicle, forcing the driver to perform an emergency stop.

Miss Glover said: "The pursuit continued down a narrow back lane, where cars were parked on the nearside and a footpath and refuse bins were on the righthand side.

"He travelled along the back lane at speeds of between 25mph and 30mph and there was a young girl, aged six or seven, playing on the pathway, narrowly avoided by the defendant.

"When he exited the back lane, he narrowly avoided a cyclist and, as he approached traffic lights, travelled on the opposite carriageway in contravention of the red light."

The court heard that, on Heaton Park Road, Mosetigg again mounted a footpath before the officer was forced to abandon the pursuit.

Mosetigg's vehicle was later found on Balmoral Terrace.

Miss Glover said the chase lasted for around two minutes and covered a distance of between 1.5 to 2 miles.

Penny Hall, mitigating, said Mosetigg suffered with paranoia, depression and anxiety, which had been made worse by being on remand during the Covid-19 pandemic when prisoners were kept in their cells 23 hours a day.

She added: "His best piece of mitigation is his early guilty plea, which was entered at the pre-trial preparation hearing."

As well as a jail sentence, Mosetigg was further banned from driving for three years and eight months and must take an extended re-test before he can get back on the roads.

The defendant cannot be described as a driver. He was a fairy-cyclist
and nothing else.
