A passenger on Thameslink claims he travelled to Brighton in 1st class
on a standard class ticket, quite legitimately?

Is this widely known?

Unfortunately, yes. And the secret gets out as they post the information on the overhead displays in the rear carriage, so these sections are starting to get quite full.

What is perhaps less well known is that many Thameslink trains are shown in the timetable as having only standard class accommodation - which means that you can use the sections at either end marked '1st class'. But these don't generally go all the way to Brighton.

A train manager I knew some years ago told me that on Sundays there used to be a very cheap first-class fare from Nottingham to London. This was even cheaper than the cheapest standard class ticket, with predictable results. So he used to amuse himself by going through the jam-packed 1st class carriages asking if anyone wanted to pay a supplement to travel in an almost empty standard class carriage.

There’s no secret about it, the on-train displays even explicitly say you
can in the relevant sections.

And if you get a Sutton loop train, you can use 1st class at either end of
the train as both sections are declassified.

It all begs the question, what on earth was the point of installing first
class at all?

I have always presumed first class tickets are perfectly valid in standard
class.

I did once do exactly this on a reasonably long journey to escape an
obnoxious fellow passenger in First.

The main reason, on many outer-suburban commuter routes, is because
there were sufficient pax who would pay the higher fare to be better
assured of getting a seat in the rush hour.

Some routes for which first class tickets are available would be
impossible without using standard class for part of the journey.

When you see the word “trick” used that way it is a good guide that the
purpose of such a website is clickbait rather than being helpful.
If the carriage has been declassified then it is no longer first class.
