"on a mainline railway".

Only about fifty years behind roads, I can remember scrapped Integrated
Circuits being used to make road that long ago.

The makers are offering to take them back.
I'm not aware that any standard gauge railways in the UK have used
them, they can probably get second hand timber and concrete sleeper
cheaper, but the Groudle Glen Railway (Isle of Man) has just installed
some, and there are a few on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway as well
as Ffestiniog as already mentioned.
They have been used in the US for a few years.
