LEEDS LOCK-MAKER'S INVENTION.
Mr. W. K. Kaye, M.l.Mech.E., chairman and son of the founder the firm of
Joseph and Sons (Ltd.). lock-makers, of Leeds and London, has completed
a simple improvement in connection with the construction of their
well-known patent railway carriage door locks, and the London and North
Eastern Railway Company have accepted it for all their new and renewal
carriages. The immediate remit is that the firm have received fresh
order to supply the company with 1,616 of their new locks, complete with
their safety catches and handles. The improvement consists of a steel
disc about the size of a sixpenny piece, behind which a screwed
projection a quarter an inch in length, which may readily screwed and
inlaid into the worn part of the striking plate, and also for
efficiently replacing the thousands now in use at comparatively small
cost. The idea suggested itself to Mr. Kaye's mind three years ago
after visiting the repairing shops of large railway plant works.
