Everything I listen to now has a harsh, echoey, rattley output to it
whether it be locally played or online. I uninstalled and reinstalled
the audio drivers a couple of times but no change.
Any suggestions?

Try using a headset or external speakers and see how they sound.

If it sounds just as bad with the headset or external speakers then I'd
then boot a Live Linux CD or USB and see how things sound with out
Microsoft being part of the picture.

Thanks for the alternatives to what I found so far, which didn't do
the trick

Earbuds and bluetooth external speakers sound right.

Do the audio jacks share the same chip as the buit in speakers? if so,
maybe the built in speakers have blown, which might be a possible
repair job.

Normally, the ear jack will come off exactly the same circuitry asthe
built in speakers. Were the earbuds wired or bluetooth?

They're wired, which is quite encouraging as far as repair
possibilities go. I hope.

It does, doesn't it. Have you downloaded the repair manual for the
laptop, and can you get the replacement speaker modules?

There's a very good model specific video on YouTube. Pretty total
strip down involved.
I'm shopping around for speakers right now. Most of them seem to be
used.

Have you got 3D Audio (or some such label) enabled for the laptop
speakers?

Can you manage without it for a bit? If so, strip it down, and check
there's nothing caught in the speakers.

That sounds like the sensible approach. Trouble is, I'm a long way
from home right now and I'm quite dependent. A (quick?) strip down
and speaker replacement seems not too far out of range ATM but the
prospect of a duplicate procedure if the solution isn't as simple as
freeing up the existing speakers would be a bit disturbing.

Not as far as I know but I'll check as best I can.
The tinny, echoey sound generally, with the bass sounding like quick
fire burping through a digital washboard might be indicative of rogue
3D.

Yeah, that was my thought - if the sound device is sending eg 7.1
encoded in some analogue way it'll sound pretty atrocious in stereo.
