2 step varification has been available for a long time. It works ok for me.
What problems are you having?

2 step verification is optional, and I have switched it off, and now I
regularly get Google messages warning me that my email service is
insecure and I need to improve it.

However, if I do turn on 2 step verification, it won't allow Thunderbird
to operate as an IMAP client.

I get rather tired of the "If is isn't a Google application it isn't
good enough" approach.

Fortunately, my digestive system can't read. It just looks for proteins,
fats and carbohydrates to process. ;-)

Likewise, Thunderbird can be persuaded to connect to any mail or news
service that doesn't block it at the server end. Most don't.

It's difficult to say Ray. I thought that I had set it up correctly but
all I get now is a complicated set of symptoms between tablet,
smartphone and desktop. I'm trying to find a logical way to portray
them so that they can be understood. So it'll take some time to do
that. Up unto yesterday I had desktop and smartphone set up for
collecting and sending both plusnet and Googlemail emails and Tablet
solely Googlemail. Yesterday I was trying to add plusnet to the tablet
and also set up the second verification. It obviously didn't help that
I was totally unaware that the plusnet mail servers were down all day.
I'll get back to you as soon as I can compile a load of symptoms.
Currently it appears that I cannot send or receive and googlemail from
any of the 3 devices, but plusnet is now OK except it only seems to be
working on the desktop. The situation isn't helped by the fact my short
term memory is rubbish. For example I know that I got into my google
account yesterday and change my secondary email address as my lineone
addy is now defunct. But right now I don't how to access my google
account. It's been forgotten. It's like almost every procedure I carry
out is almost like I'm learning it for the first time. Doh!! Going
down fast these days.

"An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Test PN to PN', Account:
'mail.plus.net (1)', Server: 'relay.plus.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '451 Internal queueing error', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC6A"

I reckon their server is clogged up, but I don't really know what that
really means but it seems, to me that the PN servers are constipated and
need more time to relieve themselves.

I'd better give them another 12 hours or so to get themselves sorted
out.n

They still have the red cross sign on the plusnet server status with
info the next update will be 12 Nov 21 at 9am.

Google considers Thunderbird to be insecure. In fact Google considers most
desktop mail clients to be so.
You have to set an app specific password via your Google account. Security/
scroll down to Signing in to Google and app passwords.
You'll be asked to sign into the account again and then set a password for a
Mail client.
After that follow the instructions.
