I was trying to fix up a mobility scooter, and encountered some recessed
bolts that seem to be some deliberate fuckery to stop anybody but
"authorised agents" fiddling with it. The bolt head is 19 mm AF, but the
recess is so tight you can't get a socket spanner into it. I have some
deep sockets that are a bit slimmer than heavy-duty sockets, but that
will not go in either. So I need a 19 mm socket with the outside
diameter of 18 mm deep socket. I presume those bolts aren't done up
really tight, so that the special thin-skinned socket can be used. Maybe
there is some cheap crap on Aliexpress like that. If I had a lathe, I
could shave the end off a socket, would be only other solution.

Is the bolt head single or double hex?
If single maybe a tube spanner may do the job.

Ah, stupid me, I forgot about those. I don't have any plumbing tools. I
shall visit the sausage-sizzle hardware megastore tomorrow.

Have you tried these?

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284267215772

You would be better off going to a tool shop and asking for *thin wall
deep sockets*. Note, you don't want thin wall deep *impact* sockets as
these may well *still* be quite a deal thicker than a standard socket.
Alternatively you could seek out a 19 mm tube spanner. Need a good
quality one as the cheapies can be made of quite thick metal in order to
achieve the requisite strength. I have a heap of these in their own
toolbox along with assorted plumbing tools, very handy at times.

I discovered Thin wall socket sets are made specifically for modern
fancy mag wheels.

My son has a newly acquired Mazda RX8 with some fancy import wheels that
require these.

I was scratching my head over the same issue when taking the wheels off
for brake pad inspection... Ended up finding a socket "adapter" floating
around in the "under boot" area of the car that did the trick. I assume
it was supplied with the wheels. It's incredibly thin. Wouldn't touch it
with an impact gun. Even got a bit queasy with the big torque wrench
tightening the nuts up

Sets are commonly available on ebay or similar...

I've had a Kinchrome set similar to those for about 30yrs, they work
perfectly fine with an impact gun or torque wrench.

I have no doubt the sockets in a set would be fine with a torque
wrench, and maybe a little rattler, but this adapter that I found in the
car is so thin walled I was dubious of its capacity... There was still a
bit of clearance in the wheels for a slightly larger diameter socket, so
I assume the ones in the set would work on the wheel nuts in this instance..

They're designed specifically for wheel nuts, which is why they have the
plastic sleeve on them.

They're not designed as thin-wall sockets specifically, but rather are
machined thin in order to accommodate the plastic sleeve, and the
plastic sleeve exists as a protector for alloy wheels. The sockets in
the set listed are cheap rubbish and any reasonable amount of force
applied to them will crack them quite quickly which is about what you'd
expect from a 20 buck socket set.

Quality versions exist, of which these cheap Chinese sockets are a copy,
but you'll probably pay 20 bucks each for a decent one.
