Especially if was the equivalent -- it would be fun to hear some of the
commentators grapple with a double-barrelled Sir Lankan name....

Double-barrelled names seem to be becoming almost de rigeur for
sportspeople now, especially in athletics. It will be interesting to see
what happens in the next generation. When Fred Smith-Jones and Amy
Harris-Burke have a child, will it take on the surname
Smith-Jones-Harris-Burke?

How many non-sportspeople under 30 do you know? I'm guessing it's
because people born in the late 60s and early 70s started to
double-barrel their names when they got married in the 90s, as a
result of wives no longer being regarded as their husband's chattels.
Another thing for 50s nostalgists to bemoan as wokery.

I dunno when Kapp & van Niekirk got married but they wont have to
make a decision about names on shirts, as SA have dropped Niekirk
for being too slow over a 2km run.

I believe most double-barrelled names these days are children's - where they get both parents' surnames.
