From today's news:

https://www.smh.com.au/traveller/travel-news/the-world-s-largest-ferris-wheel-has-stopped-turning-the-reason-why-is-a-mystery-20230718-p5dp1w.html

"The Ain Dubai, with more steel than the Eiffel Tower and nearly twice
as tall as the London Eye, was supposed to be closed for just a month."

The Eiffel Tower is constructed from iron, not steel.

Sheesh!

It is constructed of puddled iron which is "wrought iron".
As such it is ductile, soft, strong, malleable and rust resistant. Its
ductility and softness is why you see it used in fancy decorative
scrollwork. It's strength and malleability make it strong against both
tension and compression - which it why it was *perfect* for a structure
such as the Eiffel Tower's lattice structure. Because wrought iron is so
tough, it is generally resistant to fatigue failure. Its ductility means
that it can be considerably deformed without exceeding its *elastic
limit*. Wrought iron was ideal for forming such shapes as flat plates, I
beams, T beams, Channel iron, Angle iron and more. If you look at any
picture of the Eiffel tower, it's lattice structure is made up of these
typical sections. Like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is made of
steel, the Eiffel Tower requires very regular painting.

It's quite a common error for someone from the modern era to make. After
all, what is currently used in place of wrought iron is *mild steel*.
Both wrought iron and mild steel are *low carbon*.
