I am surprised the museum did noy suggest the local archive, if it was
whisky from Aviemore then Highland Archive might be interested though
surprised the National Railway Museum were not interested.

Archives have limitations on storage space of course but usually will
take in anything relevant - I hope to be posting some stuff in the post
tomorrow to the archive in Lerwick.

Yes, worth a try.

That said, I've been amazed by the reluctance of museums to accept
documents related to topics like audio engineering/manufacturing/design. It
is as if such mere 'industrial' areas were too 'grubby' for them. Despite
them having lots of Victorian examples like old mechanical machinery!

Some people are just snobs. There is (or used to be) a large building
(then a garage) in my former home town which had "Palace" on the
stonework at the end. I asked a local museum official what it might be,
and he said, "Probably a picture palace of no historic importance." Well
/I/ was interested as I had no idea there had ever been a cinema other
than the two I knew in the town. And fifty years from now, when there
are no cinemas left, people will want to know what these buildings of
curious architecture were.

(And they'll probably think that buildings called "Mecca" were mosques.)

I offered some old computers such as Commodore PETs and an Atari to the
Bletchley Computing Museum, but they weren't interested either.

Our local archive are certainly very active, the original archivist went
around local estates and managed to acquire many of their documents -
some going back to the 18th Century and earlier but often just in the
attic in cardboard boxes.

Similarly they went around many local businesses and offered to take
their archives off their hands.

Some years ago I was tidying up some bookshelves and came across some
Ben Nevis Race programmes. Rather than put them in the bin I gave them
to the archive. I have given lots of other items.

I heard a story of someone wanting to consult some old estate maps. He
went to see them at their offices and found they had a set of great maps
from the mid-18th Century that were not even catalogued. He catalogued
them then arranged for the estate office to hire a VERY large scanner
for a few weeks. Volunteers then scanned all the maps and the NLS put
them online (they were seriously large files so they could not merge
them locally!) They are all deposited in the archive and online now,
and the estate has gained a lot of space. Another area arranged for
volunteers to collect up estate plans and take them for scanning.

My local 18th century pub was refurbed some years back and the person
responsible for the 'upgrade' plans placed a new extractor fan outlet
on the outside wall which caused the fan installer to drill a bloody
big hole through the date stone, obliterating the date (year).

They may have already had some examples.

They did accept a copy of some recordings I'd made of some 'Acorn'
employees I'd made a few decades ago. Presumably because the content was
unique. I'd arranged to meet one of them at a show in Glasgow. Initially
I'd assumed we'd chat for maybe half an hour. But in the end I used two C90
tapes and some other Acorn people chimed in as well. Discussing some of the
events that weren't public at the time... and which led to their demise.
Same guy warned me in advance on the QT when he learned what was to
happen. Alas, I couldn't tell anyone else about that until later.
