Stephen Fry's speech has been both criticised and defended CREDIT: Jed Leicester

Stephen Fry, the president of Marylebone Cricket Club, is the subject of a formal complaint after being accused of making offensive jokes at a cricketing dinner.

The complaint about the actor and comedian was made by Chris Waterman, another MCC member, although his version of the comments has been disputed by others at the dinner.

It is claimed that Fry welcomed members to the dinner at the Lord’s cricket ground with the words: “I had intended to say ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen’ but there are no lady members present. I suppose they are off shagging’.”

Later, according to Waterman, Fry referred to the Allahakbarries, an amateur cricket team founded by Peter Pan author JM Barrie, and joked that “the term ‘Allahu akbar’, when used today, was usually followed by a loud bang”.
