Edinburgh last week, Glasgow this….
Son has just moved into a new flat in Glasgow and I’m up helping. Partick
station is just down the road. Just had my first ride on the Glasgow subway
- interesting to see that the single fare paper ticket is an ITSO card.
I’ve been holding it up to the light to see what’s in it. Seems to be a
multi turn antenna could round the perimeter and a very tiny chip.

Anyway, all this led me to think that on future visits it might be
interesting to venture further on the Scotrail network. Can the team
recommend recommend return trips that can be done in a day that are
scenic/interesting?

Well worth getting a train that goes over the Forth Bridge.

I think the obvious one would be towards Oban or Fort William / Mallaig. I
haven't checked the timetable, but I think a return trip to Mallaig should
be feasible, if you want a long day on the trains. There are several
opportunities to change train to shorten the journey and get back sooner if
necessary. Other options could be to Stranraer, or Carlisle via Dumfries.

Oban is very doable in a day. Lovely little town, lovely views all the
way up and down. 3 hour journey, 4 hours in Oban, which is enough to see
that you will go back another time too. Get on at Partick, change at
Dalmuir, then all the way on the same train.

Stirling and Perth. Both good, nice smallish towns/cities. Possibly do
both in a day, as they are 1hr 20m from Glasgow.

The Ayrshire coast. Ayr, Saltcoats, Largs are all worth a visit to the
seaside, and great views out to the islands. On a clear day, Northern
Ireland can be seen from Ayr.

Gourock for the ferry across to Dunoon. Though both towns are a little
jaded now, but the ferry trip is great, have a walk along the seafront,
get dinner in one of the cafes, then ferry back.

In Glasgow itself. Transport museum, then the little ferry across the
Clyde to Govan to get a pint. The 'new' distillery is just about next
door too. Kelvingrove museum and gallery is great, 10 mins walk from the
Transport museum. There is a really good walk around the area, taking in
the University, and its amazing courtyards , then through the park,
following the Kelvin River, back to the Museum. The Peoples Palace is the
other side of town, but well worth a visit, along with a walk around the
adjacent park. If you have a bike, the Clyde Path, on the Northern bank
is good.
Another reasonably local trip is to Balloch, 500 metres from Loch Lomond.
Another station used to be at the Loch, but was closed in the 80's. From
the station, its a 10 minute walk along the old rail line path to Loch
Lomond. There are numerous cafes there, overlooking the Loch, Views are
brilliant.

I have been down tp Glasgow and back in the day from Fort William so
should be possible.

You will have to study timetables but it might be possible to get up to
Oban and get the bus up to Fort William then catch the train back - or
the opposite way if the times are better.

Combined rail/ferry trip via Wemyss Bay to Rothesay and back would be
easily doable in a day. The trip is worth it for Wemyss Bay station
alone:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wemyss_Bay_railway_station

Calmac handily publish a combined timetable for the route:

https://www.calmac.co.uk/wemyssbay-rothesay-bute-ferry-winter-timetable-21-22

Crianlarich to Fort William seems to be rail replacement bus for the
next week or two, and even when rail returns, most of the return trip
would be in darkness for the next month or so. Oban is probably a better
option currently.

Other suggestions such as Ayrshire Coast, or Stirling / Perth are good
alternatives. Stranraer is probably a bit too far unless you want to get
up early enough for the 08:08 from Glasgow Central. Most of the other
services involve connections at Kilmarnock, and short turnrounds at
Stranraer (where the station is a long walk from the town)

Wot 'e said. Wemyss (pronounced "Weems") Bay is an amazing station.

I've read all the replies (so far) in this thread, Some great ideas.

Crossing the Forth Bridge has to be done to/from Edinburgh. One
further possibility is this:

Train 1: Glasgow - Stirling - Perth - Dundee - Aberdeen.
Train 2: Aberdeen - Dundee - Tay Bridge - through Fife - Forth Bridge
- Edinburgh
Train 3: Edinburgh - Glasgow

Some beautiful towns and cities there. A further option is to stop at
Dundee, cross the road, and visit "Discovery" and the V and A museum.

This offer from Scotrail might be worth a look:

Not a long journey but an interesting place to visit is the Summerlee
Museum of Scottish Industrial life at Coatbridge. Has several rail related
exhibits and at times a short tram ride using preserved Glasgow trams.

Nearest station Coatbridge Central about a 10 min walk away.

Their own website doesn’t really do it justice
but this one is a bit more imformative.
<https://www.goindustrial.co.uk/collections/summerlee-museum?&period=&theme=&page=2>

Another interesting item to visit and possibly take a boat ride on is the
Falkirk Wheel,
Falkirk has a good rail service but you really need catch a bus from the
station to where the wheel is.

Or it’s a pleasant walk along the canal from Falkirk High.

In that area you could also do Glasgow - Stirling (or Dunblane, or Alloa) -
Linlithgow - Glasgow, passing through both Falkirk stations. You might
look at the Central Scotland Rover ticket if you want to make a full day
out of it:
<https://www.scotrail.co.uk/tickets/combined-tickets-travel-passes/central-scotland-rover>
though oddly the map doesn’t label Stirling between Larbert and Bridge of
Allen.

No one seems to have mentioned a day out in Arran. The train connects with
the ferry and you can get buses around the island with no problem. Some
people manage to climb Goat Fell in a day from the mainland. You used to
be able to buy a rail ticket to Brodick but that seems to have gone with
the COVID pandemic.

I did wonder if it is possible to get the train to Mallaig go across to
Armadale, bus to Kyle of Lochalsh and the train down to Inverness and
then Glasgow but don't think it would be possible without an overnight
stay or very late finish.

Not sure when the service starts again but is it possible to get the
Jacobite from Fort William and get back in time to get a train to Glasgow?

Yes, that would involve an overnight stay. Not necessarily a bad
thing!

Yes, that would seem to be possible, but you'd need to be in Fort
William the night before.

I thought there was a train earlier than that but only the sleeper.

I think that's a temporary problem due to the bustitution. Getting to
the afternoon Jacobite is easy, but the only transport south from Fort
William afterwards is a bus to Kingussie which misses the last train
from Kingussie to Glasgow by eight minutes.

Yes. There used to be an earlier train. Watch this marvellously
evocative 1960 film about the West Highland Line on Youtube.. Made by
the BBC in the days when they made good films.

The West Highland portion of the sleeper is normally attached to seated
coaches which one can board in Glasgow[1]. It's currently not running.
Daytime services are bustituted between Crianlarich and Fort William,
but the sleeper portion is diverted to Inverness. Fort William pax get
off at Kingussie and transfer to a coach that goes nowhere near Glasgow.

[1] or at least at Dalmuir, easily reached from central Glasgow
