When watching things on iPlayer there is frequently a trailer for
something else at the beginning, with an option to "skip" - but the T3
remote doesn't seem to have the "skip" button that I've been used to on
other Freeview boxes. Is there any way to skip forward on the T3R?

I have a feeling the OK button skips you on to the programme. Can't be
100% sure, but I think that worked the last time I encountered an
iPlayer trailer. Let me know if that works, please.

Yup that's what works for me (or a different device - this functionality
should be device independent)
