When a tearful Michael Vaughan resigned as England captain after winning more matches than any of his predecessors, his employers at the England and Wales Cricket Board described him as a man who had been “the best possible ambassador for the England cricket team."

Hugh Morris, then the ECB managing director, went on to say he had “led from the front and always led with integrity and honesty.”

In a faceless office block on Fleet Street some 14 years later, the same board were describing the same man as “simply not credible” and that his denials of making an alleged racist comment at Trent Bridge “undermines his credibility generally.”

It is quite a turnaround based on 14 words (or it could be anywhere up to 18 depending on various versions put forward at one time or another by the two star witnesses for the ECB) he may have said in a team huddle on June 22, 2009, some 5,006 days ago.

They are comments Azeem Rafiq and Adil Rashid testified to the tribunal he said, one finding them offensive, the other not, but other players present said they did not hear. As Vaughan’s legal counsel, Christopher Stoner KC, put it, the “shape of his future life and livelihood” depends on the panel deciding how reliable human memory is of an event so long ago, and forgotten by practically all that were there.
