It often depends on the problem. Most keep some emergency ones open per
day. However, with an aging population the situation can only get worse
unless they canget more GPs and not cost the state any more than now.
I can see the day when all those with medical issues who are older get
forced into living in a kind of commune with doctors living on site.

We live in the unfashionable end of the borough, and the local surgery
has great difficulty in getting GPs to replace those who retire.
The problem has been around for a while, and is getting worse not better.

I'm just wondering whether GPs have decided to give to us freely what
they think is worth their current pay.

I suspect this, as the surgeon that zapped out the saphenous vein
(wrongly) from my right leg did it privately under sub-contract to the NHS.

Yet when I saw him last tweak (and got some totally unsympathetic
advice) he was jbexing for the NHS.

So, if the NHS/gubbinsment don't pay enuff, go private for some of your
medical time and increase your income to reasonable proportions?

That would make sense to me if I was one of them.

I think that's how all consultants work. When the NHS was set up their
contracts allowed them to continue doing private work.

I confess to feeling a bit guilty when hearing of problems people have with
GPs. We’ve been with a smallish, perhaps old fashioned, surgery, since
about 1982. In that time the actual doctors have changed several times,
there are usually two, plus a couple of nurses or similar.

We can usually get an appointment within 24 hrs, even the same day. I don’t
ever recall waiting more than a day or so.

They do ‘MOT’ checks every year when you get to 50 or so, I’m due one now.
I need to book it- I’ve had the pre blood tests.

They do flu jabs etc, we had ours on Friday.

If you prefer, you can see a particular Doctor.

Until recently, we had an excellent local pharmacy- we used him for about
30 years. Sadly he just retired and the replacement is ‘disappointing’.
