They took their FC status away some years ago. AFAIK only the varsity match itself was FC
but thats no longer FC now since 2019 or 2020. I recall that back in the 70s and 80s there
were a number of CC batters who kind of bumped up their averages with big scores
against the unis. I think Boycott was one I remember, but I expect he wasnt alone.

It can hardly be f-c. Oxford v Cambridge may well be a Historic
Fixture, but a women's T20 followed by a men's T20 is never going to
be considered first class. Given his abhorrence of the format, it's a
mystery why the village idiot wishes to preserve it at all costs.

Cheers,

There is still a 4-day match. It alternates between The Parks and
Fenner's. It hasn't been played at Lord's since 2000.

Oh dear, master Unwholesome displays his ignorance once again. If Cambridge and Oxford Unis had FC status they would do what they have always done, namely, put out strong elevens based on the public school intake . RH

quite so but its no longer FC despite the 4 day scheduling.

In the past like before 1980, i expect dozens of oxbridge types played for
england and other nations as well, like Lewis, Brearley, Edmonds and the Khans
but i think since 1980 its become less common. I can remember only a handful:

Marks, Tavare, Atherton, Pringle, Gallian, Darymple, Ian grieg, J Crawley,
Paul Parker.

Once Oxbridge colleges stopped admitting students on the basis of
sporting ability, restricting themselves to academic excellence, and
people only attended them in the expectation of lucrative employment,
the likelihood of them being able to raise f-c sides dropped like a
stone.

Once upon a time, the Varsity Match used to feature several players
thought to be future England captains. Nowadays, those likely to be
major international players have been identified by the time they're
16.

Cheers,

Mike
