Hi ,

got my letter today from the ABS.

The instructions are ambiguous.

1. It says I can complete the "on-line form now ".

2. It also says the questions relate to to the night of " August 10".

In the past, one had to complete the form on the night concerned.

Maybe a few days later was OK, cos it is possible to know all the answers.
But 10 days before?

Where do they get your name and address from?

I thought the idea of a census was that people rock up at your place
with a form, so whoever is there on the night will fill it in.

I have lived in a hotel building before where I rented out a hotel room
and the census night was a very organised process involving the hotel
reception.

It's fairly typical for rules in place for donkey's years to be relaxed
as soon as they inconvenience the government rather than the public.

Yes, but clearly if they allow you to fill it in online now,
that must have changed. Presumably because it collapsed
last time on the night with most doing it that night.

The last census a couple of people knocked on my door. Can't remember
what happened, maybe crossed my name off a list, but from memory I
completed it online.

Thus you know people don't necessarily rock up with a form so why did
you post "I thought the idea of a census was that people rock up at
your place with a form, so whoever is there on the night will fill it in."

The Census form is for a whole household, not an individual.

It is mean to cover the situation, for all persons , on one evening in Australia.

Because they would have had forms in case I wasn't going to do it online
- maybe I didn't have the internet or a computer. So I was correct in
saying that people rock up at your place with a form, because that's
what did happen that night.

You need to apply for a paper copy they just don't turn up.

Corse if you 'live' alone you are free to claim that there was
no one there that night and they wont be able to prove that
you have lied about that. Not clear if they can force you to
say where you were that night and check that.

That’s not currently legal in greater sydney but
would be fine outside Melburg and BrizVegas.

In theory some senseless stats collector will show
up and give you a form to fill out but in practice
that isn't going to happen if you are careful with
where you do it.

Easier to fill out the form online and say there was no
one there that night, they have no way to check that.

Tho if you have enemys in your block of flats as you
will certainly have, they might in theory ask them if
you were there that night.
