It's a common scam. When they tried it on me, they asked who I was when
I answered the phone.

Then they couldn't tell me my account number...

But this wasn't a scam. And my domain name is safe for another period.

Most of the phone scams that I get, these days, are robo-calls -
so so easy to just hang up.
but the one that is often a real person is the Windows scam -
for which I act like a bumpkin and go on & on about my
windows being just fine, just cleaned, screens and all .. :-)
... more than once I've had the scammer curse and
hang-up on me ! ... very satisfying indeed.

But WTF would your ISP _phone_ you?

I've been with PlusNet for... (bleedin' 'ell!) 20 earth years and have
never had any communication with them other than via email.

The only spam calls we have had in the last 6 months is some woman who
phoned from time to time saying she is our "Area's Energy Advisor".
I think she's now got the memo, since we haven't heard from her for
several weeks.

I too enjoy those. My usual response is to pretend to recognise the caller
as a long-lost friend. "Oh, how are you? Haven't heard from you for
ages...etc". One exchange that pleased me was lady scammer:"you are wasting
my time..", me:"I do hope so", lady scammer: "Oh, you scamp" (said with a
laugh in her voice.
But haven't had one for quite a while: I wonder if I'm on a black-list. I
do hope so.

Prolly because one time they got no response from e-mail 'cos I was in
hospital fragesandages.

And it's a nice small outfit and local, and I did some of my
transactions in their office

Yes but the snag is that often the scammers use better quality lines than
the companies themselves do. I once asked a genuine rep why if they rang me
from a phone, theycould not actually publish a list of numbers for different
issues. He had no answer.

I find it amazing that the NHs when you fill in their on line forms ask for
your email address, then as a blind person ask for all letters to be in
plain text emails they tell me they will not do emails only texts as email
is insecure. Eventually I do get them to do it but even then it usually
stops if the staff change. On one occasion I got an organisation to look at
communication options where it clearly says all communications in email. You
just cannot get the staff. Also on people calling from a call centre In a
far flung place with a thick accent over a line that has a worse bandwidth
than a normal phone hardly enriches the user experience.
