I was pointed to a TV adaptation of Asimov's Foundation series on Apple TV
and it started me thinking about how to watch a broader range of TV
without paying the BBC tax or Sky tax.

Is there a Usenet group or Forum of some sort dedicated to how to do this
legally? I'm after avoidance not evasion to use HMRC terminology!

Just look on any extreme Right wing forum / website, they seem to spend
most of their time moaning about the BBC and the TV Licence.

Since it will be copyright infringement even if you can get the means to
watch what you want, there is no legal way out of it.

Presumably you also wouldn't want to pay the Apple TV+ tax? Otherwise I
believe you could watch it on your PC.

I think I'll wait for the reviews and, if they are decent, buy the DVD
box set(s) when they come out.

I'm happy to pay for what I use Apple, Netflix, whatever - as I said I'm
not trying to evade payment but I haven't watched live TV for so long I
can't remember what I last watched. I do use Sky on demand and box sets so
would need a substitute for that.

An Amazon Firestick can provide you with Amazon Prime, Netflix, AppleTV
and your Sky box-sets (via Now TV), or any combination thereof. This
without anyone being able to accuse you of receiving material via
terrestrial or satellite broadcast.

Of course, the above would all have to be paid for via subscriptions,
but there are plenty of free streaming services (of mainly archive
material) as well as Youtube, which is a lot better than it used to be.

You'd probably have to pay a subscription to Apple TV to watch their
stuff, as you do with the likes of Netflix, Amazon and many others,
but all the subscriptions I'm aware of are less than a BBC licence. I
estimate if I were to ditch my BBC licence I could subscribe to
another two services for about the same price.

Basically, without a licence you can watch anything that isn't "live",
the modern meaning of "live" being apparently anything being broadcast
to lots of people at the same time that you're watching it, even if
it's actually a recording, which nearly everything is these days, so
you can't watch anything on Freeview or satellite. Anything on the
internet that's being streamed only to you on demand is OK. You may
need to pay a subscription to the particular service that provides it
but you won't need a BBC licence.

The exception is BBC iPlayer. You can't even legally watch their
catchup stuff without a licence, and as you have to create a login
account to get access to it your use of it is potentially traceable.

I don't know about any forums, but there's a Youtube contributor
called "chillijoncarne" (perhaps his school nickname?) who routinely
explains all this and reassures people who have been frightened by
receiving the BBC's threatening letters or perhaps a doorstep visit
from one of their enforcement goons.

I must be misunderstanding. Are you referring to GBNews? Do you think
that's right wing. I'll be honest I don't. It has plenty of people on
there that are very left wing, woke etc. well sufficient for me to
turn the sound off. There are some normal people on there too, I
suppose the idea is balance, something the rest of the media don't
attempt.

I think I will set a target of Freesat, Freeview and a streaming box then
I can drop my £57 Sky subscription and just suck up the BBC tax.

In my view sooner or later somebody will have to come up with an integrated
system for most of the popular paid for outlets at an affordable cost.. At
present, I'm quite happy to ujust use Freeview and wait out the years till
the great series become so worthless they put them out for free, like Sky do
on Pick.

At the moment you could outlay over 3 00 quid a month to get every single
feed known to mankind. Britbox is as I predicted getting foirst run stuff
form bbc itv before the terrestrial freeviews get them.
