Thanks. Looks like a neat job, with simultaneous explosions at
the base of the mast and two stay points on the same side. Some
debris from the top sections landed across an access track but
.... that may make cleaning up easier.

Tyne Tees have a tweet leading to an article and Arqiva footage
from multiple viewpoints. (Search "Bilsdale" because they haven't
used any hashtags.)

I wish I'd known it was going to happen - I'd have gone along to watch.
Bloody spoilsports...

I've seen amateur video of the collapse - not the Arqiva video on Youtube -
so I wonder how *they* knew.

Interesting that there's nothing (yet) on the Arqiva Bilsdale page

The Fawley Power Station chimney is due to be demolished on Sunday October
31 at 7am if it's not too far away.

Sadly, the other end of the country. I'd have gone to see Didcot's towers
coming down a few years ago if I'd still lived a mile or so from them: I bet
Wittenham Clumps (hill nearby with good view) was packed! But we now live in
Yorkshire - hence being able to get over to Bilsdale easily. We went for a
walk on Bilsdale *East* Moor (opposite side of Helmsley-Stokesley road) a
few weeks ago and there was a good view of the mast from near the trig
point, so we'd decided that's where we'd go there once it was announced when
the demolition would be... But H&S and safety exclusions won over allowing
the public to witness it, even from a distance. Apparently the locals were
told, but for some reason none of the locals told the newspapers - I keep an
eye on the York Press and the Ryedale Gazette sites.

Yes, we're going to watch from Meon Shore. I suspect we won't be alone,

I wonder why they did not do a live broadcast or publicise it more locally.
Maybe they were frightened of the idiot factor of people getting too close
to it, but nonetheless, its did sound a bit like a load of old scrap iron on
the audio I listened to, and yet only about three days ago somebody was
talking about repairing it and rewiring it. I guess the bean counters
weighed up the possible danger of collapse in the meantime against the cost
of a rebuild, but still site clearance is not going to be cheap, I wonder if
souvenir hunters will be up there in the dead of night for some bits they
can take away?

It's a national park, with narrow and poor roads. There'd have been
utter chaos.
The whole reason the replacement etc is taking so long is because of all
the environmental concerns.

Who was ? Provide a link please. There's never been any recent
suggestion (from Arqiva or the broadcasters) it was repairable

Blaster Bates was a legend, alongside Fred Dibnah. I love his story about "a
shower of shit over Cheshire" when he blew up a cesspit which showered a lot
of well-rotted excrement into the air; all would have gone well except that
someone strayed into the line of fire, started to run away and *nearly*
outran the shower but tripped at the last minute and got covered...

I borrowed a couple of cassettes of his talks from a friend at work many
years ago. There's one story he told which I've never managed to find on
Youtube. It concerns Father Christmas coming down a chimney and meeting a
nubile lass who invites him into bed. He's a busy man and he's got lots more
presents to deliver, so he resists her invitation three times, but
eventually her nakedness has the expected effect on his anatomy, and the
story ends with him saying "Sod it, I might as well stay. With this stiffy
I'll never get back up the chimney anyway."

Another good raconteur was David Gunson, an air-traffic controller who gave
an after-dinner talk which was recorded and released on cassette. He
describes in hilarious terms his work of a controller (and the problems that
the French controllers used to cause to British flights when they staged a
lightning strike) and ends with a description of how to fly a jumbo jet.

Here are a few close-up pictures of the felled mast that I grabbed from the
local Tyne Tees report last night, as well as one of the new 80 metre mast
which looks *very* small in comparison...

"Like gossamer, it were!"

One of his tales involved getting involved in a fox hunt, and his
memorable phrase about the horses approaching at speed was: "They don't
have Ferodo, you know."

Yep, he and Fred were two of a kind.

I might have heard a David Gunson talk, without knowing anything about
him. Your description sounds familiar. I remember somebody talking
about pulling his boots on in the morning, checking that the 'L' and
'R' marks were on the correct feet.

Years ago I read a book the founder of the Met's Bomb Squad. He had
been an AT in army and spent time in Libya clearing wartime munitions.
He went to one village where there a bomb in a cesspit. The villagers
were all waiting for him to get into the cesspit to make it safe but he
just blew it up without getting into the tank.

That sounds like him. I think it was "kid-leather gloves" with L and R on
the backs

He had a laconic Birmingham accent and a talent for telling a story in a
very entertaining way. He describes how to fly a helicopter: (I'm
paraphrasing) "It's all a bit hit-and-miss. You move the stick like crazy,
all over the place, then you hold it steady and you watch what happens,
because if you want it to do that again, *that* is where you put the stick".
When he was talking about the French air-traffic controller's strike (on a
Friday) he recounts phoning them after several days of pandemonium because
flights had to take a long detour to avoid French air-space. He finds that
they are back at work: "Affirmative. We came back to work Saturday. It's
been *very* quiet this weekend" - they'd gone on strike for one day, gone
back to work again the next day... but hadn't told any of the neighbouring
countries.

The tape is called "What goes up might come down".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_iTG1CsQBs

Another very memorable (though more serious) talk that I heard was very
dramatic account of a helicopter pilot who managed to land his helicopter
safely after the tail rotor failed, which normally makes the helicopter
impossible to fly, and it spins and crashes. Somehow this guy managed to
mentally sift through his memory of everything he had learned and he managed
to work out a plan for getting it down, even if it did land on one wheel and
go sideways down the runway till he tipped it back over and brought it to
rest. The crucial thing was that he had to land it at speed, because it was
only the forward motion of air over the tail which was preventing it
spinning. He was one of the pilots who flew the comms helicopter for
Treasure Hunt (there's a photo of the helicopter in the livery that we saw
in TH) and was returning to base after a day's filming. The TV cameraman
performed a crucial task in cutting the engines at exactly the right moment.

When we lived in the US, there was a TV documentary called 'Condition
Black' about a record surfing event off of Hawaii's North Shore.
Massive, massive swells, a total ban on anybody going out there to surf,
which of course was ignored. The helicopter pilot with the IMAX camera
on board was an ex-Vietnam pilot, and he kept on flying so low that the
'copter kept disappearing below wave-top height, with subsequent
stoppings of hearts of the shore-bound onlookers. If you can, watch it,
although I have no idea where you would find it. It has to be about 15
years old now, at least.
It was probably a Discovery Channel, a PBS Channel, or maybe a
Smithsonian Channel programme. I have forgotten all the different
channels there now.
I have it on NTSC videotape........marked as about 2003. It is not
transcribed to PC digital file.

The reason for the new temp mast looking small is because its base is
lower than the big tube, and the picture was taken probably from the
track below the site so the temp will look small.

Have a look at the link Mark put in of the demolition yesterday and you
will get a glimpse of the temp.
