They are also handicapped by only having 9 players, it would seem. I
haven't checked, but I imagine that Khawaja is over thirty and Head
under thirty.

The age profile of the England side, especially the bowlers, isn't that
different.

Another point is that batsmen have traditionally reached their peak in
their early thirties.

Of that Australian side, Warner, Starc and Boland MIGHT be past their
peaks, though even that is far from certain, Certainly Starc still seems
to be bowling well. Boland is a similar style of bowler to Anderson, who
is six years older than him.

so only 1 bowler was under 30. of course if they brought in
lawrence ahmed and potts, that would make for a much younger side
but i doubt thats gonna happen unless theres more injuries.

i believe marnus and SS both average 50+, and KWJ is the leading scorer in
test cricket over the last few years.

From my POV: I think Test batsmen can play until their mid-to-late 30s. 36? I'd not question age. 37+? I'd start to think about it.

The reason I asked you about your POV is I'm sure you've said previously that players can play Tests into their 40s. Did you not say that?

It's highly dependent on the batsman as well
Generally I'd expect a more solid player with a solid technique to do better later than an eye player
Chanderpaul was pretty solid apart from his stance and he held on pretty well until he was in his 40s

Gooch averaged 65 in 91, 41.9 in 92, 45 in 93 (56 in the 93 Ashes, but failed in India) before falling off a cliff in 94 & 95
He turned 38 during 91

a big factor is just that if somebody has a bad series in their 20s it's "just a bad series"
if somebody has a bad series at 35 there's a lot of discussion...
