Does anyone know of a DVD/blu ray player that can get quickly from
inserting a disk to the main menu without first insisting on playing all
the threats and warnings first? To be clear, something that plugs into the
TV, not something that needs me to mess around with a PC first.

I cannot say where to find one but I can say that it is possible. Many
years ago I bought a Sony DVP-NS405 DVD player. The supplier (I don't
remember who) gave me options for mods for multiregion, which I
purchased, and skipping the intros, which I declined.

No, not unless you hack the firmware. Also its a real pain that these
players never seem to have speaking menus on the discs, so operating them to
get to the various bits of content, even the audio described track tends to
involve a sighted person telling you the sequence of button presses you
need to get to the various bits.
This issue of access was solved many years ago, but the producers refuse to
implement them except the odd one now and again.

Compared with the nag screens, etc, I find 'messing' with a computer to be
a trivial drawback. Also easier to find an AV file than a disc somewhere.
You can get a lot of AV onto an >= 8TB storage device. Then discs can be
'put in the shed' and not clutter the house.

That said, I don't use MS's OS as I regard that as a 'mess'. :-)

Ripping is only if value if you want to rewatch something. Most of our DVD
watching is to view it once and then move on to something else.

This house has machines with Win10, MacOS and Linux. None of them provide a
means of hassle free ripping, all need intervention.

Our is a mix of new, and material we've watched in the past - often many
times. Quite a lot is AV versions of musical performances. Other items are
discs we bought decades ago, and are now 'in the shed' as t'were.

> This house has machines with Win10, MacOS and Linux. None of them

I find Handbreak makes ripping discs easy and runs a batch whilst I do
something else, elsewhere. Makes the process a background activity I just
need to feed and then let run for a few hours.

And from then on its DnD or click to play. Which seems simple enough to me.

Mind you, I do use ROX Filer and set filetypes and actions to make a click
on an AV file or DnD to a suitable icon for VLC simply play the file
full-screen.(*) I also did automate having a simple ROX app generate
'playlists' so I can click on one to start a given AV file at a given time.

In my case, ROX Filer on top of xfce Mint makes it simple enough. Lot
faster and 'from your armchair' that furtling though loads of boxes, etc.
(Use a wireless mouse+keyboard.)

FWIW with any process I do often, I write a ROX app to help automate. Makes
life a lot easier.

Jim

(*) FWIW VLC also will rip discs, but IMV is a PITA to use compared with
Handbrake.

This probably won't help.

Years ago there was a manufacturer called Kaleidescape that made
expensive players (and servers) with ripping software to copy DVDs and
Bluerays to an internal hard drive RAID. They sold at the high end of
silly money for these, and the company is long dead (after the ripping
software was deemed illegal).

https://variety.com/2016/digital/news/kaleidescape-shuts-down-1201842027/

I went to their London press launch party, which was obviously aimed at
marketing types that spent time with high net worth individuals
maximising their yacht relaxation time by skipping adverts from their life.

Available on eBay, at stupid money still.

-&-

Shouldn't the threats and warnings be compulsory when films are played
from the streaming services?
