I'm surprised by his decision, but no doubt as he aged he was finding it
more and more difficult to become and remain fit, and perhaps he had had
enough of all the time in the gym. As he's intelligent and articulate, I
imagine that a successful career with Sky awaits, if not quite as
lucrative as playing for England was.

Anderson said the other day that he didn't intend to retire, but I
wonder if he might now change his mind.

I'm sure some players have never officially retired, just drifted
away. Was Gough one of them?

i'm surprised too as hes perfs this ashes suggest hes got 1 more
season left in him, but maybe he didnt want to tour any more,
although he probably could have negotiated a way out of
going to india, and i dont think were playing anyother tests
til next summer.

yes, but knowing england theyr prob desparate for him to stay
on now broads decided to go.

either way it should be welcomed as time for the likes of Tongue
Potts Mahmood etc to get a run in the team. Prob wont be needed
much in india, but theyve tests against windies and SL next year.

He retired from Tests (due to injury), but he played ODIs for another 3
years (and a couple of T20Is).

I'm not. He's a cheeky chappy. He bailed out of the Pakistan tour a year ago because of a baby or something and nothing at all to do with the blue skies, flat pitches and no swing.

The next England tour is India (blue skies, flat pitches and no swing) where Broad has 10 wickets in 8 matches at 61.70. So a pie-flinger.

Plus he has a very slappable face.

AFAICS, the only other Test tour he missed since his debut was in West
Indies last year, when he and Anderson weren't picked, and the pitches
in Pakistan were so flat that Anderson, Wood and Robinson all averaged
under 22.
