Weird fault on GREAT TV! and all the GREAT! Movie channels.

The pictures are all kind of shifted up a bit with a black bar across
about 75% of the way down.

Seems to be on all platforms as far as I can see!
Freeview, Freesat and Sky.

They fixed it pretty quickly, but FWIW I recorded it.

Looks like a synchronisation fault: the top of the transmitted frame begins
about 1/3 down the real picture frame, then there's a black bar between one
frame and the next, and then the top of the real frame at the bottom of the
transmitted frame.

I wonder what the significance of the white dots and dashes is at the top of
the real frame. In analogue days they'd have been teletext subtitles or
other data in the top few lines that the TV should have cropped off. But not
for digital transmission...

It was fixed by the time I checked at about 21:30, so I'm glad you recorded
it.

It certainly looks like a teletext signal (although it should be
moving). I wonder if it was left over from the master tape and wasn't
stripped properly?

In the USA, that line is used for subtitling, but at a much lower data rate.

I got bored and curious. From the highest resolution YouTube version
(about 850 pixels wide), via GIMP to clean up/square off the fuzzy
greys, manual decode to binary and then stuffed into a hacky teletext
decoder ... yes it looks like a teletext line :)

LSB->MSB order

10101010 55 U (Run In)
10101010 55 U (Run In)
11100100 27 ' (Frame)

00001011 D0 ? (Mag,RowAddr)
01010111 EA ? (Mag,RowAddr) (Mag = 0, Row = 31)

It's not a page header (row 0), PDC (row 30) Subtitles etc. so ...
not sure ... the text following is ...

00100110 64 d [First character of line]
00011100 38 8
11100011 47 G
11100011 47 G
01000000 02 ?
11100011 63 c
11110100 2F /
00001011 D0 P
00000000 00 ?
00000100 (x29) 20 <spaces>
00000111 E0 (60) '
10110010 4D M [Last character of line]

Probably means "If you can see this, the picture is askew"

E&OE on the manual decoding, obviously ...

That series of channels should be called grate in my view and why did we
have a Christmas movies channel when it was still September and why do none
of these channels seem capable of putting out AD, even on commercials?
What are offcom playing at, as many of the movies have it already provided
and so it would cost them zilch.

Something in the playout chain had lost genlock (so wasn't synchronised
with the station SPG). Very easy happens, but such things rarely make it
to air
