they might need their hands to be held while they
venture forth onto the choppy waters of Usenet proper.

My strong recommendations would be :

1. Forte Agent as a newsreader
2. Astraweb for usenet feed

I've been happily using Agent < Free Agent > for decades and
have never had any problems.
Astraweb sells blocks of "bandwidth" rather than monthly
charges ; my $ 10. lasts me several years and includes some
binary groups ; also the feed seems quite problem-free -
- when I compare it to problems that seem to plague
Eternal September so frequently.

The main problem for those participating via phone or tablet is finding
a news reader.

I've been using Xnews, also for decades. Very simple, very basic, just wot
I needs, innit.

I haven't had any problems with ES. Just keeps working here.

All of usenet has been somewhat unreliable lately due to a torrent of
spam which appears to originate in Thailand, going by the alphabet used.

Even NIN has been affected.

I use Thunderbird (old version 52.2.1) mainly because some of my
add-ons (mainly Thunderbrowse) aren't available on newer versions.
I, too, have had no problems with ES. As you say, it just keeps working.

OK - my snap-judgement was just based on mostly this group
where it seems like someone is questioning ES feed
every month or two - I guess it's other issues.

Except when it doesn’t. Rarely a week goes by without a “Is ES down?”
message. Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration and I accept that it’s great
value for money but NIN isn’t likely to break anyone’s bank and is way more
reliable.

Ditto. I dare say that some E-S users can be a trifle impatient if the
server occasionally becomes unresponsive. AFAICS it's usually a
component of the service that has become wedged and needs to
be restarted. Often, all that is needed is a kick from the admin, Ray,
whose attention is not unlimited. He surely has other responsibilities
to deal with.

A little patience from users would not go amiss, rather than yelling
"The very useful free service which I like to use is broken ~again~".
If not, I'm sure that Ray would gladly refund them.

For those who do appreciate E-S and Ray's efforts, there is a Pay Pal
Donate button on the website. <https://www.eternal-september.org>
It helps to pay for the server hosting service.

Yes, dun that.

Ray and some other independent server operators are jbexvat yvxr fgvax
to contain the current plague of Googlespam. It's very much a game of
whack-a-mole. You'd be seeing a ~awful~ lot more spam if they weren't
putting many hours into that thankless task.

Of my 5 or 6 active groups - all but 1 are back to normal -
ie no gg spam. but the woodworking group is now getting
over a thousand per day .. I'm not sure why it is so special.
It takes me ~ 2 seconds to scan the headers for legit posts
then it's literally 2 mouse clicks to purge it all.
