I seem to have rediscovered books. Remember books? Sort of like the
internet but usually not about as many things, and you have to have the
light on to use them. Good though. Anyway, I’ve been looking at my
quotations books. I’ve got quite few; I’ve always liked the way a pithy
quote can encapsulate a thought, and I can even remember a few
quotations – yes, I can quote a few quotes. “Well he would, wouldn’t
he?” – Mandy Rice-Davies. “A week is a long time in politics.” – Harold
Wilson. “We are not amused.” Queen Victoria (possibly). That’s about it
actually. Amnesia is as always my handy excuse.

I used to enjoy ‘Quote Unquote’; probably the only genuinely amusing
programme on the Woke-ridden barren desert of right-on dourness that
Radio Four has become.

But looking at my quotations books I came across a guy called Voltaire.
I sort of thought his quotes would be all about electricity, because
they named the volt after him, didn’t they? Err no, turns out that was a
different chap, an Italian, name of Volta.

Voltaire was French, but I forgave him that when I read some of his
famous quotes. I reckon a lot of what he said must have become the
accepted wisdom of all civilised nations over the years, with moralities
and even laws based on it. But then, more recently, M. Voltaire’s
wisdom seems to have somehow slipped away from us. I think that’s a
great shame.

Here are some of Voltaire’s quotes. It’s a pity he isn’t around today to
shout them from the rooftops.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to
say it.

The right to free speech is more important than the content of the speech.

Dare to think for yourself.

The human brain is a complex organ with the wonderful power of enabling
man to find reasons for continuing to believe whatever it is that he
wants to believe.

Is politics nothing other than the art of deliberately lying?

The most important decision you make is to be in a good mood.

Many are destined to reason wrongly; others, not to reason at all; and
others, to persecute those who do reason.

It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong.

The more often a stupidity is repeated, the more it gets the appearance
of wisdom.

If you want to know who controls you, look at who you are not allowed to
criticize.

Common sense is not so common.

Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to
believe.

He didn't say it and it's unlikely he would have approved of the sentiment.

The quotation is usually shortened to "MRDA" when used.

In the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right
to say it.
to helvétius, following the burning of De l'esprit in 1759
attributed to voltaire, but in fact a later summary of his attitude by
S. G. Tallentyre in The Friends of Voltaire (1907); see voltaire

Trouble with this quote is it typically gets used when Mr X says "I never
touched her", and some smart-arse quotes MRD as if that proves Mr X is a liar.
It doesn't.

+1.
Voltaire was one of the few people who could rival Churchill when it
came to humanist aphorisms.

<The rest snipped but enjoyed>

I also heard of a quotation about Voltaire you might appreciate:

Attributed to Bertrand Russell:
"There's a bible on that shelf there. But I keep it next to Voltaire -
poison and antidote."

And one by Voltaire that wasn't in your list:

The man who leaves money to charity in his will is only giving away what
no longer belongs to him.

Just another post in which Rod demonstrates his 'problem'. Yeah OK Rod.
We all know your inferiority complex causes you to show off, often by
belittling others.

Yeah OK Rod. Don't worry, we all know you think you're inferior to the
rest of us. You really don't need to keep proving it you know.

Yeah OK Rod. We all know you struggle with your deep-seated feelings of
insecurity and inferiority. The purpose of your post, like virtually all
of your posts, is just to show off, to gainsay others; to show how
'superior' you are. It's pathetic.

I'm sure he would have approved of it, and so was S G Tallentyre, who
was actually Evelyn Beatrice Hall. I've been thinking lately that when
the statue topplers have finished removing any effigies of those evil
white patriarchal villains that had anything to do with the slave
trade, they might be persuaded that a statue of a woman was a worthy
replacement, though they might be unhappy about it once they realised
what she stood for.

The quote of Voltaire you gave is fictitious. Moreover, as the Wikipedia
entry demonstrates, he did not accept the libertarian viewpoint you
attribute to him. You may regard that as pointless sniping but others
may others may regard it as a falsehood corrected.

Twenty years ago, we (self/wife) would spend a good chunk of the weekend
trying to complete the Telegraph's large general knowledge crossword. It
was fun. We had (still have) a reasonable collection of books - quotes,
poetry, history, dictionary, thesaurus, atlas etc. Filling in the final
answer always gave a great feeling of satisfaction.

These days, we don't even buy a newspaper :-(
