Scrimshaw has a splendid moustache which wouldn't look out of place in
an old sepia photograph of an XI from the 1880s. (He also has a splendid
name. When he finished up taking three wickets after his terrible first
11 balls - legal ones, 17 if you add in the no balls - was that the
Scrimshaw Redemption?)

If more bowlers got through an over as admirably quickly as Tom Hartley,
we wouldn't have a problem with slow over rates. It shows what's
possible - for a spinner, at least.

yes indeed - George Louis Sheridan Scrimshaw is a mouthful but spofforth he wasnt.
i dont remember ever seeing a bowler look so miserable after taking his first
england wkt! after the first 2 overs i did wonder if mick lewis's record might be in
danger. i dunno if steve finn ever sported a tache, but scrimo is like a slightly
slower version complete with problem runup. Hes hardly played anything
except t20 so bowling 8 overs was probably quite tough, but his last
6 gave him figures of 2-31, not so bad after that nightmare start.

but the other debutant, Hain did enjoy the experience and it was mainly thanks
to him and some slogging by carse that got england to a reasonable total
after jacks got out and at least they batted out their overs unlike the senior side.
even if it was our 2nd or 3rd XI, it was entertaining but theres something wrong when
9,10 & 11 hit 10x4 & 4x6 after being 188-8. Other teams are using such series
to warm up for the WC, ours are resting perhaps some are recovering, we shall
see which approach works out later.

and he was quite economical even if it was ahmed who got the wkts, and
at least he didnt bowl a nb unlike jacks, who batted brilliantly but bowled
abysmally.

also kudos to TB for producing such an excellent pitch so late in the season.

Almost all of the other teams are at the beginning of their season
rather than the end.

Some teams must be coming off the back of a tour just to turn around
and head to the world cup.

Very UNUSUAL for Australia to LOSE 5 ODIs in a row, three in SA and two
in India.

It's not as unusual as you'd think. They did more or less the same in
2020 - the last 2 in India followed by 3 in SA.

In 2018, they lost 7 in a row - 6 v England (1 in Aus, 5 in Eng) and 1
at home to SA.

In 2017, they lost 6 in a row (2 in NZ, 1 in Eng, 3 in Ind) if you don't
count 1 abandoned and 2 no-results.

In 2016, they lost 5-0 in SA.

So that's 5 times in the last 7 years, although we have to go back a
further 7 years to find the previous instance.

In contrast, India and England have each lost 5 in a row only once in
the last 7 years.

My bad.

Australia being such a powerhouse in ODIs is least expected to lose 5 to
7 games in a row.
