Can anybody recommend ear drops that will dissolve ear wax please? They
seem to come with a variety of additives like Hydrogen Peroxide or Sodium
Bicarbonate and I have no idea of that is good or bad. Surgery doesn't do
syringing any more.

My wife found the Otex Express combi pack very good. It comes with a
skoosher and hydrogen peroxide solution.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Otex-3453305-Express-Combi-Pack/dp/B002FAHBKA/ref=asc_df_B002FAHBKA/?

I just dig mine out with a spoon. The skoosher is probably safer.

No they are done by opticians quite often at a number of quid a throw. I
think its going down the same road as dentistry. Both the additives you
mention are supposed to liquidise and unstuck the wax, but it does not
actually all come out and some ear cleaning with the pulsating water jet on
the end of a small scope they poke in the ear seems to work well.
Unfortunately as one ages, the expected improvement seems to be less as I
fancy the high frequency bits are lost.

I’ve tried all of them and found little difference.

Spec savers offer wax removal and are pretty good, although I now use a
local small company which I find very good - I fact I was there on Tuesday.
She charges £45 if you visit her clinic or £65 for a home visit. That
seems to be the going rate.

In the UK it was Olive Oil - back in the days when the only place you
could buy olive oil was from a Chemist (Pharmacist), in tiny bottles.

Olive oil is one of the least risky and generally effective type of
ear drops. I'm not sure whether the only advantage of getting it in ickle
bockles from the chemist is the syringe or whether it is actually different
somehow from the stuff I cook with.

It had those magic letters 'BP' after the Ingredient 'Olive Oil'. I
suspect Olive Oil BP has been filtered and sterilised but

Interesting, I do not think Boots do; however at the bottom of our
street there is a hairdresser supplier who does sell little glass

Many thanks for all the replies, much appreciated :-)

I have ordered the Otex Express pack as suggested by Tim+ (thanks!) and
will give it a whirl.

In the days when surgeries did this sort of thing the nurse told me I had
a narrow, hairy, canal. Wasn't sure quite how to take that!

The hydrogen peroxide ones always jbex for me when needed. But I usually use
the shower head to wash out my lugs and seldom need anything else.

The 3% solution (10 Vol) is perfectly adequate. You can use the 6% but the
9% is likly to cause skin irritation.

Put a few drops in the affected ear. Leave it for a few minutes or if it
stops fizzing before that.

I read a medical paper from one of the major medical journals. Some American
medics were on a family vacation on an island a hundred miles from nowhere.
A family member had impacted wax from poking it with a cotton-bud. They
improvised.

A super-soaker filled with warm water and a little detergent proved
adequate. In the acknowledgements at the end of the paper they thanked their
sprog for the loan of equipment.
