The overall US Case Fatality Rate is 1.5%, 0.3% currently, which suggest Omicron is indeed milder, or they simply aren't seeing the consequential deaths yet.

A CFR of 0.3% predicts 3,240 of those 1,080,211 will die. Which demonstrates milder but more infectious still means more hospital admissions and more deaths.

Not to mention that more than a 9-11's worth of deaths every day will push the 850,000 total up rather quickly.
