A driver pushed a cyclist off his bike and kicked him all over his head and body while he was lying on the ground, it is alleged.

Joseph Lawrence (26) is accused of getting out of his car and knocking the man on to the ground, where he attacked and injured him.

He is facing trial after Judge John King ruled the case was too serious to be dealt with at Blanchardstown District Court.

Mr Lawrence, with an address at a hotel in west Dublin, is charged with assault causing harm to a man at Willsbrook Road, Lucan.

Garda Sergeant Maria Callaghan said the DPP directed summary trial of the case in the district court subject to the judge considering the issue of jurisdiction.

Medical records were submitted and the judge asked for an outline of the allegations.

Sgt Callaghan said the alleged victim was out cycling his bike at 4.20pm on June 9, 2020, when he was approached by the accused in a vehicle at traffic lights.

"Words were exchanged between the parties and the defendant exited the vehicle and assaulted the injured party by knocking him off his bike," Sgt Callaghan alleged.

"The injured party hit his head and he was kicked while he was on the ground."

Asked by the judge where the cyclist was allegedly kicked, she said: "All over his head and body."

The judge asked what the injuries were and the sergeant said the alleged victim sustained bruising. He consulted the medical records and said they referred to a fracture and "hyperventilating".

"I don't need to hear any more," the judge said. "Just the fact that he was pushed off his bike and kicked repeatedly on the ground is enough for me to refuse jurisdiction."

He adjourned the case to October, for the further directions of the DPP.

Defence solicitor William Cadogan consented to an extension of time for the service of a book of evidence.

With such an allegation, it is little wonder that the person of whom it
is alleged is facing a trial, even if it isn't in the UK.
