If any readers saw the Remembrance Service from the RAH last night that
must have seen to huge screens either side of the organ?

I have been to the RAH a couple of times and in reality it is much
smaller than it looks on TV, but those screens were BIG!

Has anyone any inside info on their size?

LOL! Yes, it's like a breath of fresh air, isn't it!

Unfortunately though, I can't give a helpful answer either.

I bet you also can't explain why almost all the audience appeared
to be unmasked. :-(

Perhaps they thought their magic illuminated bangles also warded
off infection.

We've just been to the local CWG cemetery for the annual service where
children from a local school place a rose against each headstone. I
would guess 3/4 of them were wearing masks - and this in the open air!

May I ask if I was mistaken to think those were screens for digital
projectors?

I didn't watch it, but that's not good.

It is wise to wear masks anywhere where people are crowded together,
including possibly in the open air, though, if there's sufficient wind
blowing, that could seem somewhat overkill. I wouldn't knock anyone for
doing it though.

No, they were genuine screens. I would guess they could have been 30ft x
20ft (or 32x18 for 16:9 format) if not bigger even. They were showing
either a poppy or a burning candle against a black background most the
time, but when it can to hymns they showed the words verse by verse. It
look as though the royals - who did have programmes - where using them
as well and they were at the other end of the auditorium!!

I have a related question. I was watching the Lord Mayor's Show on TV
when my eye was caught by a large furniture van in the distance with a
video screen covering the whole of one side. I eagerly awaited it
coming closer for a good view, but of course the BBC managed not show
it again - no doubt the screen had a commercial station's stuff or an
advert on it.

We had the World Road Cycling Championships here a couple of years ago
and there was a huge screen 'thing' arrived. It was like a large HGV
container but built as a truck and when parked up a massive couble sided
screen lifted up out of the middle of it. Unlike the screens on the link
above this was a 'solid' object with the screens on it rather than a
centra lift with the screens on either side. What amazed me was that
there were no outriggers on the sides of the vehicle to prevent it being
blown over!

That is easy, they all wanted to be seen ont telly!

With regard to big screens, these days I'd imagine you could build them as
big as you liked, you could even use upscalling to make them appear
unpixilated I'd assume. The question is were they totally in sync with the
live proceedings?

If the screen itself is made from LEDs (rather than being a passive
sheet with something smaller optically projecting onto it) then I hope
it's constructed in some modular fashion that makes it possible to
remove and replace sections of it. A screen represents quite a large
target, and using them at sporting events involving high velocity
spherical projectiles must be asking for trouble. Then there is, as
always, a percentage of the public who will cheerfully provide trouble
without being asked.

There are quite a lot of TV prgrammes that feature the whole backdrop
as a video panel, often divided in the middle to allow a performer to
walk on stage when the two sides are parted. Sometimes a rear view is
seen when the performer does a quick interview, and it's apparent that
the screen is made up of many modules butted together.

I often wonder about that use with BBC Breakfast, and certainly the
local opt-out news broadcasts all seem to do it extensively.

Yes, it can be done that way. There's a large display in our local
Asda that looks like a lot of flat screen TVs (six or eight, must pay
attention next time) aligned to make one big screen. You can see the
dividing lines made by the screen borders, but they're much narrower
than would have been the case with CRT displays, and of course the
geometry is better so they line up perfectly and it works very well.

But some of the ones used at major events appear to be single large
displays with no visible dividing lines. If they're made from arrays
of LEDs I think they must be constructed as separate plug-in modules
to allow for damage, because it would be hugely expensive to take the
whole thing out of service to repair a single blemish by wielding a
soldering iron at a handful of individual LEDs.

Rod.
