The hostility is not generated by the SNP, it is generated by
individuals on both sides of YES/NO. There is a reason why some
incomers are described as "white settlers".
Many other incomers have joined the SNP or otherwise merged into the
local communities.

From the last set of accounts (2020) for MacDonald Hotels Ltd. - "In
the opinion of the directors there is no ultimate controlling party".

30 shareholders were declared in a 2022 confirmation statement, a
collection of individuals and trusts, the latter whose names (apart
from the Cardrona Charitable Trust) suggest connection with the
MacDonald family.
Each hotel seems to be owned by a single company which in turn is
entirely owned by the main company (via one holding company? -
MacDonald Hotels Investments Ltd).

Day tours are a rather different matter, although some do start rather
early/finish late.

The next one I'm booked on you'd need to be at Cambridge Station no
later than a quarter to seven, and get back about eleven-thirty. Unless
you live fairly local, I expect one or both might require an overnight
hotel.

Mitigated somewhat by people selecting such a tour *because* they live
locally. Tours starting at London terminuses are less likely to have
entirely local patrons, but on the other hand, there's plenty of hotels
within half a mile.

Sounds like various parties have bought out the BoS shareholding since
the most recent media reports about the situation (albeit those are
several years ago).

In Switzerland SBB offers that service; in Japan there's a company called
Ta-q-bin who do hotel-to-hotel luggage transfer. In both instances the
standard service leaves you without your luggage for two nights, though.

Most railtours have a number of pick-up points, of course; one I was
looking at recently, for example, has pick up/set down at Burton-on-Trent,
Tamworth, Coleshill Parkway, Birmingham New Street, Stourbridge Jn,
Kidderminster, Droitwich Spa, Worcester Shrub Hill, Cheltenham and Swindon
(U)/Bristol Parkway (D).

That's a lot of places to have 'only locals' from.

I agree. As an incomer who has effectively naturalised I see the SNP being
very open handed about who counts as Scottish. While non-independence
issues are currently the most pressing ones currently, I don’t see the
basic aspiration to independence as illegitimate. While there are
extremists on both sides, naturally (some of the opposition does tend to be
rather shouty “how dare they!” sort of stuff, and some of that comes from
Westminster, unfortunately), most of the debate is measured and thoughtful
because it’s about very serious issues.

That’s an interesting choice of reference, since the main thrust is that
the UK Government are being chary about disclosing legal advice because
that would break precedent; that happens to be the same argument being used
by the Scottish Government, not the SNP.

There are a whole series of issues which they are suppressing and of
course lots of money that has gone missing.

Do they still have the Scottish equivalent of injunction to suppress at
least one report?

At least some of the Scottish media are now starting to challenge them.

Sure. It's quite common for tours from Kings Cross to do a pickup at
Potters Bar (long enough platform, or is it simply adjacent enough to
the M25?) and probably Peterborough.

The one I mentioned earlier is Cambridge/Ely/March/Peterborough/Newark,
although the hinterland for Ely and March isn't huge. And Newark is two
and a half hours into the trip which seems a lot to sacrifice. Perhaps
they are stopping there to water, anyway.

It's the M25 link that's important. Similarly, WCML tours often offer a Watford pick-up, and GWR tours Slough and
Reading pick-ups.

The multi-day tours don't offer multiple pick-ups, as the luggage has to be stowed in the brake van at the start of the
journey. However, they can offer the option of leaving the tour early, for people who can carry their luggage with them
in the passenger carriages.

So, for example, with the recent GBXIV tour, people could leave at Exeter, Reading or Clapham Junction, and quite a few
did. In fact, several of the Newcastle-based catering staff left at Exeter (where they could catch a direct XC train
home), and were replaced by stewards who had come down just to cover the final dinner service.

GNER once promised to build a Parkway station on the M25. When they got
the franchise they changed their mind to "no, we only promised to
consider building a Parkway station... and we've considered it for five
minutes and the answer is 'no' ".

Sevenoaks Chronicle and Kentish Advertiser - Thursday 22 March 1990

Transport raises no major issues although if British Rail carries out
its proposal to build an international station at Swanley the local
implications will have to be reviewed.

BRITISH Rail has dismissed as “pure speculation” reports that its new
preferred route for the Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail Link will see the
proposed Swanley Parkway station built at Tweed Hill to the north east
of the town

The “New Civil Engineer” magazine reported last week that details of
BR’s new preferred route have gone to the Department of Transport for
approval

The journal stated that BR now wants a shorter tunnel near Meopham
emerging south of the route announced last November with the line
running just north of New Ash Green to the Parkway station at Tweed Hill
“The article is pure speculation no decisions have been made in respect
of the line” said a BR spokesman this week “We expect our formal
proposals to be released in the late Spring”

The report was greeted warily by Sevenoaks District Council’s Chief
Executive Mr Bruce Cova.

The moral being "don't believe a single word, until you see spades in
the ground".

Another GNER kite that was flow was doubling (to 4-tracks) the Welwyn
viaduct. A proposal which was never going to get past the Nimbys.

I wonder who GNER thought would be paying for these projects? It would
have had to be Railtrack, which wasn't enthusiastic about spending money.

There was nevertheless quite a bit of enthusiasm at the time to "improve
the ECML", a project which as we know is still ongoing. Someone agreed
to pay a lot (£500m, Network Rail, 2005) for the tarting up of Kings
Cross station, which dates back to that era.

One can't help but point out that co-incides with GNER's new (but
ill-fated) franchise where they committed to large premium payments.

I'll have to look into this further, because while not having spent any
additional money yet, other arrangements have been made (and some not
made - eg possible alternative excursions for Late June/early July,
which may well now be fully booked) revolving around this particular
tour.

... apparently the kettle's refurbishment programme is running late...

I have to say, it's put me off this particular tour operator, because
others would probably have gone ahead but with a slightly less glamorous
kettle for the half of the trip that's not diesel-hauled. We couldn't
care less which kettle is pulling the train, indeed Tornado is a bit too
quiet for some enthusiasts.

ps I was musing earlier about the stop at Newark possibly being to take
on water, but I hadn't fully appreciated that's within the extensive
diesel portion.

Ah, I wondered why it was cancelled, as it was apparently a popular tour.

Yes, West Coast can sometimes provide a substitute steam loco, as it has a
number in the Carnforth pool. But A1 only has Tornado (currently) and I
think Steam Dreams normally only uses its own Mayflower.

Possibly a pathing stop? Slow charter trains often get looped, to allow a
flight of faster service trains to overtake.

I'm sorry to break the news. That was a decent present.

I received an email on 27th April promising a refund within two weeks.
It has yet to appear.
