I gave up on Bluetooth and other wireless mouses because no matter the
settings they all seem to fall asleep after a while.

I bought a couple of Logitech B100 and the scroll wheel only works on one
of them, this morning the pointer started jumping all over the screen but
it has settled down now.

I would like a wired mouse where the cable come out of it tail not its
head but Google is not being my friend. Has anybody cone across such a
beast or a mouse that could be modified please?

this has a joystick so you don't actually need to move the mouse per se.

I have some difficulty imagining how one would use an optical mouse on a
table with the cable coming out from under your palm to your wrist....

The other option is a wacom graphics tablet as my Wacom pad has the USB
connector coming out on the left hand edge. you could use insulation
tape to bring the cable down the left and then halfway along the bottom
Blue peter fashion style.

It does require you to use a "pen" but that probably feels more natural
to some people or those who like to draw or use MS whiteboard.

Many thank, SH, hadn't really though that one through - I'm more concerned
about knocking my cup of tea off the coffee table with the mouse cable :-)

Some USB keyboards have an onboard USB hub so a mouse could be plugged
into that with a cable tie to shorten the cable?

As it happens my monitor also has an onboard USB hub, so I have the KB,
Mouse,Webcam and Wacom tablet plugged into the monitor so its less
cables back to the PC case.

This never happens to me, with bt or rf mice. Or rather, they wake up in
an imperceptible amount of time when I move them. Are you using £5 mice?
Go for a nice one, your desk and arm will appreciate it.

(Various Logitech MX and G-series in use here, plus the Apple ones, no
issues)

I usually go for Microsoft KTF-00002 Modern Bluetooth Mouse which is about
£22. Left mouse button usually dies a few days after the guarantee!

Is that cheap? I may be well out of date on prices.

Mine tend to start at around £60 but last for many many years. I still
have my MX700 from about 2005; I got a spare one in about 2012 as they
went out of production. In about 2018 I gave the spare one to my dad.
Original still works great, although some of the silver paint has rubbed
off showing the underlying black plastic.

Logitech M185, about £10. So good (for me, mouse-ambidextrous) I bought a
spare about 10 years ago. Never needed it.

And Magic Trackpad for the Mac; good but pricey.

learn like I did to be ambidextrous....

at work, I have two computers side by side with 2 sets of dual monitors,
2 keyboards and 2 mice.

Work forbids the use of KVM switches so I quickly learned to be
ambidextrous with the mice and swapped the buttons around on the left mouse

They are arranged on the desk as:

Left handed mouse for PC A - KB for PC A - KB for PC B - Right handed
mouse for PC B.

One happy side effect is that I can now do basic handwriting with my
left hand!

Many thanks Rob, I must say that's more my price :-)

I am left handed with size 11.5 feet and hands to match, I wonder if the
bigger M190 is as robust?
